Plane crashes into tree during emergency landing at Johnson County Airport | News

OLATHE, KS (KCTV) – An aircraft crashed into several trees during an emergency landing last Friday morning at the Johnson County Administrative Airport. Authorities said the plane’s pilot and co-pilot were not injured.

The plane took off from the airport for Colorado just before noon and experienced some problems in the air, prompting it to attempt an emergency landing at 11:57 a.m., according to the emergency crew.

During an emergency landing, the plane ended up about half a mile south of the runway and crashed into several trees, losing both wings in the process. The pilot and co-pilot, who were all fine, were the only people on board.

After landing in the trees, the pilot and co-pilot were then unable to get out of the plane. They ended up making it themselves.

The airport is in Olathe, but technically the plane crashed within the city limits of Overland Park.

Flight records show the airport had only one departure from 10:30 a.m. to noon, a single-engine Piper Cherokee Arrow that flew for a minute just before noon. That aircraft was registered with Two Wings And A Prayer LLC in addition to Aurora, CO.

Police and emergency teams were on the scene Friday afternoon, waiting for the Federal Aviation Administration to arrive on the scene and launch a formal investigation.
