PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium 2022 games: Is it a good deal?

PlayStation Plus Essential — what people often call a good PlayStation Plus — is on again an excellent list The game is free for registered players and of course, players must register if they want multiplayer access.

But at the registration of new Extra and Premium service layers, which Released in June, frankly, it’s hard to see where the value is. And I say this as a PlayStation Plus Premium subscriber, mainly because of the work I do.

No one expected PlayStation Plus to mimic Xbox Game Pass; an imitator will be five years late to the party anyway. But even the raw number of games available to PS Plus Extra and Premium members — most of which are inherited from the old PlayStation Now service — doesn’t help much. Playstation 4 and the PS5 add-on program competes with Microsoft.

By the end of the year, PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers — the highest level of service — have access to more than 1,000 games. (About 450 are PS4 and PS5 games, forms the core of the service and is available to PlayStation Plus Extra subscribers. The rest are streamable classics from the PlayStation 3 generation and earlier.) That’s a lot of games, more than double what Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers currently have access to ( thanks to the EA Play library).

But that’s also because Xbox Game Pass is curated, with games alternating as new games are added. PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium feel like Sony, with help from third-party publishers, is throwing things at the wall in hopes of something sticking. The problem is that everything is stable, making it nearly impossible for a subscription to have a prominent name game, much less justify the $14.99 (Extra) or $17.99 (Premium) ) every month. PlayStation Plus Essential is still $9.99 a month.

The second is the fact that Sony is on the profile says it won’t launch first party games on higher service tiers of PS Plus. It’s certainly Sony’s choice, but it’s also not the same as forcing third-party publishers to roll out on Extra or Premium. lostan exclusive control panel — and one is welcomesure — is the only game that launches on PS Plus Extra on the same day as the general release date.

It seems strange for Sony to be such a holding company, when date-based launch dates are perhaps the defining feature of Xbox Game Pass, and especially since PlayStation Plus Essential has had no problems with releases. eye by day for years – stretching title like Missile Federation to smaller platform-specific indie games. PS Plus Essential even has two PlayStation launches in 2022.

The multitude of games added to the PS Plus’s two higher tiers — 240 total — really aren’t worth analyzing in the same way. we analyze the smaller collection of PS Plus Essential games. Not when data points like age (dozens of years old, if not tens of years old) and whether titles are offered on other services (many titles already on PS Plus) old over the years) are still fundamentally debatable points.

Instead, this analysis will focus on what PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium can do in 2023 to make a more worthwhile subscription, rather than on what Sony didn’t do in 2022.

Add value to PS Plus Premium or kill it

The only real stand out feature of PS Plus’ flagship service is that subscribers can stream hundreds of games to their PS5, PS4, or PC—but importantly not to mobile devices, like Xbox Game Pass Ultimate did. And games that are only available to Premium subscribers — mostly PS3 and PlayStation Portable games that are at least a decade old — aren’t worth paying the extra $3 per month.

Sony Interactive Entertainment should enhance their streaming opportunities — mobile support is minimal — or simply expand the streaming capabilities they have to Extra and remove Premium. The extra service tier only adds to the confusion of customers about what the new PlayStation Plus really has to offer. Extra-level generosity can also increase subscriptions.

Pick a star every month and stick with it

SIE’s approach seems to be open to a wide range of content, where their Game Pass competitors take a more targeted approach. Notably, PS Plus Extra games don’t leave the library, and it’s certainly worth it for paying subscribers. But new games added every month—the biggest opportunity Sony has to market PlayStation Plus—is more of a themed or overloaded week than a buffet that guarantees you’ll like at least one.

Example: outside lostlaunch, July sees four Assassin’s Creed titles – include Ezio . Collection, actually three games — added to PlayStation Plus Extra’s library. It is with The Avengers (a PS4 and PS5 game coming out in 2020) and Final Fantasy 7 remake give PlayStation 5. Later, in September, death loopthe availability of competition with Assassin’s Creed Origins and Watch Dogs 2.

It seems a bit ungrateful to complain about so many AAA games coming up for monthly subscriptions. But again, Sony’s shotgun approach doesn’t seem to work, when it comes to differentiating the PS Plus or letting players know the unique value of the service. In November, the company told investors that it really lost about 2 million paying subscribers, even as PlayStation’s total revenue from network services grew 10% that quarter. That means some people have opted for more expensive plans, but the 10% increase doesn’t sound like much reason to celebrate.

At a minimum, game additions should fall within clearly drawn genre lines (a sports title here, a driving title there) rather than a series of open-world adventures. engulfed an exclusive console that had a launch date of just a year earlier.

day by day

Sony Interactive Entertainment is not interested in bringing in first-party titles like the day has passed on PlayStation Plus Extra or Premium — but there should be no problem distributing it later to PlayStation Plus Essential subscribers.

Please review the release date and date

Sony seems pretty adamant in its stance that a first-party date launch won’t happen on PlayStation Plus. But they are offering a product where the majority of customer expectations have been set by Microsoft during the past 5 years. This may be ok in 2022 when Xbox brings little to the table — but the disparity will become much clearer in 2023.

If Sony doesn’t want to remove a game from its steady pool of in-house developers, or if it can’t convince another major publisher to join them, that’s really up to them. But Sony will then have to be content with most of its subscribers only at the PlayStation Plus Essential level, as most appear to be by the end of 2022.
