Polestar invests in battery technology company StoreDot, still aims to charge 5 minutes by 2024

Polestar on Tuesday announced an investment in Israel-based battery company StoreDot, which claims it will achieve ultra-fast charging in tests.

StoreDot aims to mass produce EV batteries capable of adding 160 kilometers — or just under 100 miles — of range after just five minutes of charging by 2024. By 2028, StoreDot aims to restore a 100-mile range in just after three minutes of charging, and aim to restore the same range with two minutes of charge in 2032.

Charging in five minutes is something StoreDot announced for the first time in 2017. The company has delivered first test example of the so-called “five-minute charge” lithium-ion cells last year.

Polestar doesn’t disclose how much it invests in StoreDot, but the automaker is in good company. Other investors include Daimler, BP, VinFast, Samsung, and parent brand Polestar Volvo.

According to the release, StoreDot’s battery technology will be tested in “concept cars”. Only with a successful trial will Polestar consider using the technology in car production, and as early as 2026. Polestar could also tap into StoreDot’s expertise in silicon-based battery solutions. Silicon anode provide the ability to increase battery capacity.

Daimler has just announced that it plans to use silicon-anode technology from Sila in Mercedes-Benz EQG Electric SUV. An all-electric version of the Mercedes G-Class all-terrain vehicle, the EQG is slated to debut in 2024, but the silicon-anode version of the Sila will be a possible long-range model. released later. The cells will be manufactured in Washington State using 100% renewable energy, Mercedes and Sila have announced.
