Police Chief of St. Charles said: Father shot dead son, who was armed during the confrontation
ST. Rose, La. (WVUE) – A father in St. Charles shot and killed his son Tuesday after a tense confrontation in which the son was heavily armed, the sheriff said.
Officials confirmed that 21-year-old Clayton Poche died at the scene as a result of a gunshot wound by his father, Ben Poche.
Authorities say the incident happened in the 200 block of Dianne Drive around 5:30 p.m. on March 29.
Detectives learned that Clayton arrived at his parents’ home wearing a bulletproof vest and armed with a semi-automatic handgun. He is said to have started arguing with his mother when his father returned home.
The confrontation escalated to the point where Clayton drew a shotgun towards his father. In turn, Ben grabbed his own gun, shooting his son dead.
The sheriff says Clayton has a history of unstable and violent behavior and is the subject of intense psychiatric care.
“The situation is very sad. A tragic situation. A long history of mental illness even for a young person,” said Sheriff Greg Champagne. “Worse is substance abuse, alcohol and it’s really typical of the problems we’re seeing across the country.”
Delegates said that the incident was of domestic nature.
“[Clayton] was done many times, usually after we were arrested in different cases. Mostly threats of violence,” said Sheriff Champagne. “I’m sure this is the most traumatic thing anyone can go through, but I think what – from what I understand – is being well maintained.
