‘Power of the Dog’ Director Jane Campion Sets Palm Springs Honor – The Hollywood Reporter

The filmmaker was selected to receive Director of the Year at the Palm Springs International Film Awards, a live event that will be held at the Palm Springs Convention Center on January 6. Event – hosted by American Express presented and sponsored by Tonight’s reception – will also honor Penelope Cruz (International Star Award, Lead Actress) and Kristen Stewart (Feature Award, Actress). Additional honorees will be announced in the coming weeks.

“Jane Campion has created a cinematic masterpiece once again with her latest film The power of the dog,” Festival president Harold Matzner said. “This Western-set psychological drama enlivens Thomas Savage’s novel with brilliant work from a main cast led by Benedict Cumberbatch.”

The power of the dog Cumberbatch plays a troubled rancher named Phil Burbank. Tensions rise when his brother (Jesse Plemons) brings home an unexpected new bride (Kirsten Dunst) and her young son (Kodi Smit-McPhee). The Netflix series is written, produced, and directed by Campion, who won the Silver Lion for directing at the Venice International Film Festival. The film is out now and will be released on Netflix on December 1.

Campion’s past credits include Piano, Baby, Angel on My Table, Portrait of a Woman, Holy Smoke, In the Cut, Lake Top and Bright Star. Palm Springs directorial recipients include Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Steve Mc Queen, Alexander Payne, Jason Reitman, David O.Russell, Quentin Tarantino and Chloé Zhao.
