‘Power of the Dog,’ ‘Don’t Look’ Goes To Strong Streaming Numbers – The Hollywood Reporter

The power of the dog and Don’t look up go to strong numbers in their separate streaming debut.

Directed by Jane Campion, The power of the dog reached 209 million minutes of viewing in the US for the week of December 6-12, making it the most-watched special in its time slot, according to Nielsen.

Last week, the West-starring Benedict Cumberbatch debuted at No. 1 with an impressive 470 million minutes of viewing time, according to Nielsen charts from November 29 to December 29.

Nielsen’s streaming ratings, which are delayed by about a month, include TV viewing and do not include content viewed on computers or mobile devices. And the ratings only include Apple TV+, Disney+, Hulu, Netflix, and Prime Video.

Unlike box office receipts – which studios have released for decades – streaming numbers for movies are difficult to come by. Netflix changed this dynamic in an important way when it recently announced that it would begin posting weekly “hours watched” for all of its TV series and series globally.

It’s not possible to verify those numbers or compare them to Nielsen, as Nielsen only covers the US (about two-thirds of Netflix subscribers are in other countries). Additionally, Nielsen reports by minutes watched, versus hours.

For its part, Netflix reports that The power of the dog reached 27.2 million hours watched for the week of November 29-December. 5 to come in at No. 1 and 13.3 million hours the following week to come in at No. 4. (In minutes watched, those numbers are 1.62 million and 798 million, respectively.)

The power of the dog is one of several Netflix originals competing in this year’s Oscar race. Another is the star of Adam McKay Don’t look up, launched on streamer on December 24th.

According to Netflix data, Don’t look up already one of the most watched titles ever, reaching 263.3 million watch hours almost matching Bird box (282 million minutes), the most watched Netflix series of all time. Red Notice (364 million hours) is number 1. Don’t look upTheir total includes 152.3 million hours for the week of December 27 through January 3, the top weekly number for any Netflix series.

Don’t look up won’t appear on Nielsen until the end of January.
