Pre-trial judgment by order in the case of Nathaniel Veltman
London, Ont. –
The court ordered a preliminary hearing in the case of 20-year-old Nathaniel Veltman, a man charged with four counts of murder in the death of a Muslim family.
Four members of the same family died in a horrific crash and ran along Hyde Park Road in west London during the summer.
Veltman remained silent during a brief appearance Tuesday via Zoom from the Elgin-Middlesex Detention Center.
The Afzaal family was walking on Sunday night on June 6 when they were hit by a pickup truck heading south. Salman, 46, Madiha, 44, Yumnah, 15, and Talat, 72, a grandmother, were all killed.
Along with the murder charge, Veltman also faces one count of attempted murder related to the injuries of 9-year-old Fayez Afzaal, who eventually recovered in hospital.
London police have called the incident a targeted attack on Muslims.
The issue has been banned from publication and Veltman is in custody until its next appearance on December 15.
