‘Precious, irreplaceable’ $140K bottle of Scotch for sale at Calgary store – Calgary
A liquor store in Calgary is offering a chance to own a piece of history.
The Kensington Liquor Market sells a very rare bottle of Scotch worth more than its weight in gold.
“It was distilled on February 3, 1940, during World War II,” said store owner Andrew Ferguson.
“This is quite precious and irreplaceable.”
The price per bottle is $140,000.
“Of the 250 bottles produced, it was the last one,” says Ferguson. “Once it’s sold, that’s it, we won’t see another one.”
On Monday, Ferguson showed off the bottle to longtime customer and Scotch enthusiast Rob Rosenfeld.
“It’s fun to have at home,” says Rosenfeld. “But I think I’m going to have to have some pretty long and potentially difficult conversations with my spouse.”
Ferguson had two bottles of Scotch worth $140,000 when the shipment arrived from Scotland two weeks ago – he sold one.
“Rare bottles like these, the closest similarity would be to collecting fine art or cars, buying it as an investment,” he said.
Ferguson and Rosenfeld point out that for those who can afford it, a rare Scotch can be opened for a special occasion.
“Are you waiting for your 80th birthday?” Rosenfeld said. “Are you waiting for the two of you to turn 40?”
“Or just a Tuesday night?” Ferguson joked.
Rosenfeld says that matches his attitude towards Scotch, which is to be “enjoyed”.
