It was more than 200 days since WNBA star Brittney Griner is arrest on drug charges while traveling to Russia to play with her international team. Since then, the Phoenix Mercury center has been handed down sentence of nine years in prison after being convicted of drug possession and trafficking in August.
Griner allegedly entered the country with vape boxes containing hash oil, but the US government in May announced that she was being falsely detained. In July, the administration of US President Joe Biden make an agreement with the Russian government to free Griner, a deal that included the return of the 31-year-old man and another incarcerated American, Paul Whelan, back to the states in exchange for the release of an arms dealer. Russian gas is currently in prison in the US.
In early August, it was reported that Russia had “ready to discuss“a prisoner swap proposal.
On Thursday, a Associated Press and ESPN reporting note that President Biden is scheduled to meet the Griner family on Friday at the White House, as is Whelan’s. The separate meetings will be the first face-to-face meetings between Biden and his family.
“He wants to let them know that they are still on the top of their minds and that his team is working on this every day to make sure that they are,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said at a news conference on Thursday. Brittney and Paul returned home safely.”
