Quebec reports 1,982 new COVID-19 cases, 4 deaths – Montreal

Quebec reported 1,982 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday and four deaths linked to the virus.

The number of cases was just below the total of 2,013 on Friday, marking the first time since January that the province reported 2,000 new infections.

The Ministry of Health said that the number of COVID-19 hospitalizations decreased by 5 cases to 251 cases, of which the number of patients in intensive care increased from one to 63 cases.

Officials said 40,372 doses of the vaccine were given in the past 24 hours, including about 14,000 doses given to children ages 5 to 11 and a third 16,000 doses given to people 70 years of age and older.

On Friday, public health officials in Montreal said they suspect the Omicron variant has spread in the city.

The public health ministry said 14 new cases of COVID-19 had been detected on the island, with just five linked to travel outside the country.
