‘Queen’ Camilla Is Finally Winning Acceptance From British Public, First Poll Shows

Just a few days after Queen Elizabeth announced Camilla Parker Bowles will be named queen When Prince Charles ascended the throne, a survey of British popular opinion found a significant improvement in popularity of his second wife.

The first poll conducted since the Queen gave Camilla her official endorsement, fetch Daily mail and released Wednesday, shows that 55 percent of those surveyed support the move to officially elevate Camilla to queen status in the meantime.

More amazingly, only 28% objected, the rest either did not care or had no opinion on the matter.

Exactly half of the samples said they respected Camilla, while 39% said they did not respect her. Eleven percent said they had no opinion.

The queen’s statement last week stands in stark contrast to her long-standing pledge that she will remain a princess out of respect for Princess Diana’s memory.

The figures show a significant boost for Charles and Camilla, with 51% now saying the crown shouldn’t jump a generation and will go directly to Prince William when the queen dies. About 35% of those surveyed said they still support that move, even though that is not possible under current constitutional arrangements.

In the context of the broader individual popularity ratings, although their ratings have improved significantly, Charles and Camilla are both still among the lesser known royals: Camilla has a rating of +21, a staggering 16 percentage points increase since a similar survey was conducted last March. (Popularity ratings work by asking people if they like or dislike a person; a rating of 0 means an equal number of people like and dislike the person.)

It’s no surprise that Prince Andrew, who has been embroiled in sexual assault allegations, is the least popular royal, with an approval rating of -82. However, the level of dislike for Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle in the UK will likely surprise fans of the royal family abroad, where they are much more popular: Meghan has a rating of -30 and Royal Harry’s death is -13, down an amazing 27 percentage points.

The queen herself has a stratospheric approval rating of +75.

As for public opinion and the royal family, there is often an age divide, with those over 45 being significantly more likely to endorse Camilla. While 64% of the 45+ respondents agreed with her being the queen, among those under 45, that number dropped to 44%.

The poll surveyed a sample of the population, with 1,054 adults across the UK being asked for their opinion.

The results will be seen as testament to the queen’s decision to formalize and legitimize Camilla as the next queen.

Given that Camilla was one of the most criticized women in the United Kingdom in the years immediately following Diana’s death in 1997, the result is testament to her careful and slow public campaign and media.

Interestingly, however, 58% of respondents still believe that Princess Diana would make a better queen than Camilla, and a staggering 68% say that William and Kate would make a better king and queen than Charles and Camilla.
