Cynthia Erivo, Leslie Odom Jr., Ben Platt and Rachel Zegler celebrated Stephen Sondheim’s work on the 2022 Grammy Awards In the Memoriam tribute, there are some of the late composers and the most famous songs of the lyricists.
Cynthia Erivo, Leslie Odom Jr., Ben Platt and Rachel Zegler performed a medley of Sondheim hits on Sunday night, their performance showcasing different motifs, as part of a glorified Grammy segment both icons as well as other individuals the music industry has lost in this last year.
Each performer, including this year’s Grammy nominees Odom and Platt, performed a different Sondheim classic. Platt, dressed in black, opens the tribute, singing “Not A Day Goes By” from Let’s have fun togetherwhile Erivo, dressed in black and silver, and Odom Jr. in a yellow suit, performing a gentle duet “Sent in Clowns” from A couple of night songs.
Zegler, in a bright red dress, then walked onto the stage, standing next to Erivo and Odom as she started singing “Somewhere” from West storya film adaptation in which she starred. Towards the end of the performance, Platt joined the other three on stage to sing, all four singing as an ensemble before ending the song to a standing ovation.
Sondheim died on November 26 at the age of 91. Lyricist and composer known for his work on classics of the musical theater in addition to prominent works in the middle, including Into the Woods, Company and Sweeney Todd. He has received a number of awards and honors throughout his decades-long career, including a Pulitzer Prize, an Academy Award, and seven Grammy Awards.
The 64th Annual Grammy Awards will be held Sunday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
