Racine County parole officer attacked by drunk driver

RACINE (CBS58) – A Racine County parole officer was critically injured in an accident on Sunday, June 19. She is still recovering at Froedtert Hospital. Investigators said she and four others were hit by a drunk driver.

The accident changed Krystal Petrie’s life forever. Relatives say that she does not want to drive a car or even be a passenger. They are expecting a very long way to recovery.

“I remember seeing the lights. They were shining right at us and I just remember thinking about my son. I thought for sure we were going to die,” Petrie said.

Petrie survived to tell her story. Petrie and three other friends left an event in Racine on Sunday. The ride home was interrupted near Gehring Road and Douglas Avenue in the village of Caledonia. Prosecutors allege it was all because of Carnell Williford, 31. Police said he was drunk.

“It really made me feel like I was driving drunk,” says Petrie.

Two witnesses told police Williford was driving carelessly before the collision. They said his car had completely crossed the middle line and swerved into oncoming traffic. That’s when it hit your friend Petrie’s car.

Officers were contacted by Williford, who smelled intoxicants on his breath, had bloodshot and glassy eyes, and was slurred. Initially, Williford said he fell asleep while driving, but later said he was looking at his phone to change the music shortly before the crash. The criminal complaint says he failed all of the sobriety tests at the scene.

“Why are you getting in the car. There’s a lot on TV about not drinking and driving,” Kimberly Bahena said. She is Petrie’s mother.

Petrie had difficulty breathing due to damaged lungs and rib cage. She also broke many bones and found it difficult to stand on her feet.

“She’s going to be successful. We’re planning a rehab. We’re not planning a funeral and I’m grateful for that,” Bahena said.

“I’m still so happy to be here, no amount of pain I’m going through right now can surpass my gratitude,” Petrie said.

Williford was charged with four counts of First-degree Hazardous Safety and another four counts of Injury Injury Activity. He was given a $2,000 cash bond. The preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 29.
