Reliance Jio has received the intention from the Ministry of Telecommunications to establish a mobile satellite network
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has issued a letter of intent (LoI) to Reliance Jio Infocomm’s satellite unit, according to information from several industry sources, according to a report. The permission will allow Jio to establish global mobile personal communications using satellite services (GMPCS) in the areas for which it has received a license to operate. Mobile satellite networks can operate synchronously with low earth orbit (LEO), medium earth orbit (MEO) as well as geosynchronous satellites (GEO).
According to a PTI report, citing industry sources, Reliance Jio Infocomm’s satellite unit, also known as Jio Satellite Communications Limited (JSCL), received a letter of intent (LoI) from Telecommunications department of India, enabling the company to establish and operate global mobile personal communications satellite services (GMPCS).
The LoI, according to sources, was granted to the telecom company on Monday. With the license, Reliance Jio can set up and operate GMPCS services in the areas where the government has granted a license.
The licenses granted to the company will be valid for a period of 20 years. The certificate of ownership will be effective from the date it is issued to the company after fulfilling the prescribed conditions.
GMPCS services provide voice and data services over the satellite. To function, these mobile satellites can operate in conjunction with low earth orbit (LEO), medium earth orbit (MEO) and geosynchronous (GEO) satellites.
Earlier this year, Reliance Jio announced they plan to provide satellite based broadband services across India in partnership with Luxembourg based SES. A new step that puts Jio on par with Elon Musk‘S SpaceX and Sunil MittalOneWeb’s to provide high speed Internet service.
