Republicans Invent Reasons to Blame Joe Biden for Ukraine Russia

It’s time for leaders around the world to stop Russia’s attack on Ukraine. But Republicans in Washington seem to think the whole situation is President Joe Biden’s fault — at least, that’s what they’re trying to convince voters.

Republicans spent much of the week lashing out at Biden, blaming the president for not being tough enough on Russia and mocking the way the administration was handling the evacuations from Ukraine.

The curious part of their criticism is that an emergency evacuation from Ukraine is not currently necessary, both because Russia has not yet attacked and, more importantly, there are regular commercial flights in and out of Ukraine.

However, that didn’t stop Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA) and several other Republicans from writing alphabet to Secretary of State Tony Blinken this week, urging him to reverse the administration’s stated plan not to carry out military evacuations of Americans if they are arrested at Moscow’s crossings in Ukraine.

“This response is completely incomplete,” the letter read. “This response is the failure of the Commander-in-Chief to comply with his legally binding requirements to protect American citizens traveling and living abroad and the failure of State Department leadership to in de-escalating a conflict or planning and executing a coordinated evacuation effectively. ”

Other Republicans are outspokenly insulting Biden as a way to blame him for Russia’s aggression toward Ukraine.

“He talks tough but Putin doesn’t respect statements, he only respects strength,” Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY), who sits on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said on Fox. News. “He views President Biden as weak, ineffective, and indecisive.”

Barrasso even invented a scenario in which he knew exactly what Putin was thinking, which military and intelligence analysts deemed a chore.

“Putin has to calculate, and I think he’s done with this, ‘What will it cost me to infiltrate, invade, how much will it cost me?’ And he thinks with Biden in the White House… that price will be relatively low,” Barrasso said.

Republicans went after Biden for months, trying to be able to blame him and the Democrats if things went catastrophically bad in Ukraine. They frequently claim that President Donald Trump is much stronger on Russia than Biden, ignoring some of the ways Trump has been soft on Putin.

But the GOP’s latest launchpad for Biden appreciation – the evacuation incident – isn’t the one-of-a-kind punch that Republicans might think it is. And it’s not cut and dried, experts say.

The decision to announce no military evacuation plan can actually be quite conservative. Former ambassador to Ukraine Bill Taylor suggested that the motivation behind the move might be to avoid the military accidentally engaging in an all-out war with the Russian military.

“What the president has said is valid, is that he doesn’t want to put the military in a state of exposure [or] conflict with the Russian military and so he wanted everyone to get out so he didn’t have to send troops in,” Taylor told The Daily Beast.

The Biden administration has vowed not to send troops to Ukraine, to avoid war with Russia. If Russia attacked Ukraine, allowing troops or equipment to evacuate Ukraine could make it difficult for them and entail the possibility that the US will have to respond.

American officials have warned that Moscow is seeking to declare aggression from Ukraine or the West to justification for the invasion of Ukraine for many weeks now. Sending troops to the US military to evacuate at this point could give Russia what it wants: a potential reason to invade, according to Doug London, a former senior CIA operations officer.

“If you start sending American C-17s” to evacuate Americans, “the Russians will say we are using it to disguise our ‘invasion plan’ and say ‘We must act before the Americans’,” London told The Daily Beast, adding that you don’t use US forces until absolutely necessary.

“You don’t use US forces because, whenever you use and put US forces on the ground, there is a chance of engagement,” said London, who recently published a memoir on time working at the CIA, said. Recruiter: Spying and the Lost Art of American Intelligence. “You don’t go from 0 to 60… It’s a bucket of flour. Why are you serving this to the Russians? “

In a speech at the United Nations Security Council this week, Blinken warned of that, while repeating his warning that Russia plans to “make up excuses” to attack Ukraine.

For its part, the Pentagon has suggested that Americans have had many warnings to get out, in case the drums of war strike.

Pentagon press secretary John Kirby said at a recent news conference, saying during a recent press conference Mr Biden and the State Department had been warning about leaving Ukraine for weeks in line with Russia’s stance. .

Biden warned in times of crisis, the US government may not be able to intervene.

“It’s not like we’re dealing with a terrorist organization. We are dealing with one of the largest armies in the world,” Biden told NBC News ‘Lester Holt in an interview last week. “Things can get crazy fast.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has gradually reduced its personnel at US Embassy in Kyivultimately moving it to another location in Ukraine in the event of a conflict, has been providing instructions to Americans on how to leave the country in the interim, including how they can move overland , cross-border specific instructions, commercial flights available and emergency financial assistance.

A spokesman for the State Department also dismissed the suggestion that the State Department had not done enough.

“In the case of Ukraine, as the security situation has deteriorated, the Department has fulfilled its obligation to US citizens,” the spokesperson told The Daily Beast when reached for comment.

The State Department spokesman added that the Biden administration has established a welcome center in southeastern Poland and that State Department teams are ready to host Americans in Romania, Hungary, and Moldova. and Slovakia. The Pentagon has also indicated that the US military would help Polish authorities in the evacuation should that happen.

In recent days, the picture on the ground in Ukraine looks bleak.

On Thursday, Russia informed the Foreign Ministry that Putin would expel the US deputy ambassadorBart Gorman, a move the State Department called an “escalation.”

Russian-backed forces have also shelling on innocent targets in eastern Ukraine, the biggest attack on breakaway regions in Ukraine since 2018, and concerns are growing evacuation order in the so-called Donetsk People’s Republic amid reports of an explosion that could provide a pretext for an invasion. And Russia warned in a letter this week that it would be “forced” to use “military-technical measures” if it did not receive security guarantees from the West.

Although earlier this week Russia appeared to announce that it would be conducting a troop withdrawal, no such evidence has been verified, and instead, satellite image revealed the opposite, as The Daily Beast reported. Russia also sent thousands more troops towards the border, according to US intelligence.

That’s not all bad scorecards for the administration, though. Intelligence analysts are applauding Biden’s attempt to make public an internal Russian plan to destabilize their conspiracy efforts. The administration’s work to rally the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and other allies in the face of Russian aggression is also being appreciated.
