Review of the movie Puss in Boots: Last Wish: The most unexpected victory of 2022

Audiences don’t have to rely on a sequel to Shrek’s side story from 11 years ago to discover the dazzling spectacle, but here we are. Just a few days later Avatar: The Road of Water sophisticated and stretches the authentic CG language of James Cameron’s original to greater heights (depth?), a Puss in Boots film frantically swings the action’s pendulum in the exact opposite stylistic direction, while retains Cameron’s bold wavelength. The Cat Goes Out: The Last WishDreamWorks Animation’s latest movie, mercilessly stolen from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse playbook, and you know what, thank god for it – the result is a fairy tale adventure supplemented with genuine laughs with dramatic, sparkling art.

I have absolutely no memory of what happened in 2011 Cat in bootsnor a Netflix show The Adventures of the Hiking Cat, but I’m happy to report that my lack of knowledge of Puss has not negatively affected my time watching a cat voiced by Antonio Banderas running around with his sword. When we met Puss, he was a milky legend who realized he had wasted eight of his nine lives. Wolf, a physical manifestation of death wielding two scythes and voiced by drugs‘ Wagner Moura, couldn’t be happier – all he wanted was to take down the arrogant cat when he begged for mercy. But when Puss encounters a fallen star capable of granting one wish, he sets out with Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek) and a small dog named Perrito (What do we do in the dark‘ Harvey Guillén) to seize the opportunity. On his fluffy tail are Goldilocks (Florence Pugh) and her Three Bears Crime Family, and the Shrek-verse version of the Collector, Jack Horner “Big” (John Mulaney), who also wants to have one. star.

The talk of a Cat in Boots 2 started right after the success of the first movie. Executive producer Guillermo del Toro revealed in 2012 that a script was being worked on, and by 2014 Banderas had The promise of the return of the character — possibly with Shrek. None of this materialized, and DreamWorks saw a shift in the creative team. Finally Joel Crawford (The Croods: A New Age) to direct the film, with Januel Mercado co-directing, with MO completely rethinking what a CG animated film must be like at DreamWorks.

“When Shrek movie premiere, CG animation in an interesting space,” Last Wish production designer Nate Wragg recently said Cartoon magazine. “Part of that scene was, ‘Well, it looks real, even though it’s not. Let’s see what computers can do.’ Now we’ve been able to bring the pendulum back to the space where the animation originated, which is an artistic expression. Bambibackground of watercolor. It’s beautiful, but it doesn’t have to be like the photo.”

As an animation fan, this has been around for a long time. Spidermancoming in 2018 feels like a pebble flying at the speed of a bullet inside the windshield of an orthodox western cartoon. Cracks appear immediately and between DreamWorks’ Bad guysNetflix secretand the upcoming Pixar elementThe rules can be broken completely. The Cat Goes Out: The Last Wish giving the raw Shrek brand a facelift in every conceivable way is a reason for hope.

Last Wish is the closest film I’ve ever seen that can emulate hand-drawn concept art. On the way to the wishing star, Puss and company passed prismatic backdrops — from vibrant pinks and forest greens to the rustic interior of a female cat prison — created by the art team. feeling amusing. Their encounters with beasts use color, lines, and dynamic camera movements to take viewers deeper into battles and enjoy water path, frequently changing the frame rate to stimulate the senses. Puss, looking more like oil than ever, may be monologue about his legendary skills for a second, animation “on the ones,” then found themselves in a noisy skirmish with a towering troll the next day, which the animation team “over two people.” Feeling built on the work of Spiderman and pull the Shrek franchise, of all things, into high-art territory. So great.

Is the movie also really funny? Recently rewatched Shrek 1 and Shrek 2I can’t say I walked in Last Wish with an open heart / funny bones – pop culture jokes and fairy tale riffs that were dusty and now petrified. The Last Wish The team, which includes trusted screenwriters Paul Fisher and Tommy Swerdlow, recreates the cartoon-like humor. While the film offers some nostalgic nods to Shrek, the brief appearances of Gingerbread Man and Pinocchio, and Jack Horner’s endless collection of fantasy literature give Mulaney plenty of jokes, style, and fun. The comedy of the movie is similar to Snake Day. Turns out, Banderas can do what Bill Murray mumbles to himself. A replay shows Puss reliving his past deaths and the versions of himself (Showman Puss, Swole Puss, Drunk Puss) that led to each death. In this sequel, a somewhat obligatory poop joke is actually a litter box joke about Puss faking his death and “burying” his body. Good!

Last Wish possibly the best thing DreamWorks Animation, a studio not known for pushing the boundaries of mediums, has produced in the past decade. The year 2010 gave us the thrill of How to Train Your Dragon and in 2011 there are Kung Fu Panda 2, an imaginative martial arts adventure that has established director Jennifer Yuh Nelson as a top action director (even if Hollywood has never done it well). Probably Dragon Training Secrets 2 tops the original with bigger action – I’ll leave that to die hard fans. Bad guys definitely a step in the right technological direction this early year. I won’t join with Dear boss discourse.

Whatever the case, achievements sparkle with hope. DreamWorks Animation, a studio that has risen from many different homes, never found a foothold against Pixar, and struggled under the shadow of Minions, may have found a new way. If this level of artistry and cleverness is what the studio is bringing to future movies, damn it, I’ll be lining up for it. Shrek 5. There’s a lot of animation that can be done, and Hollywood finally seems ready to license its artists to do it.
