The larger screen in the center of the dashboard is welcome, but the Kluger still looks and feels like a craftsman on the inside.

The rear camera looks brilliant, the graphics on the new system are slick and responsive when you press a button.

Wireless Apple CarPlay is also a welcome addition, though without a wireless phone charger, you’ll need to plug it into an outlet for extended periods of time to avoid running out of battery.

Toyota’s oversized trip computer screens and analog dials are clear, but they look low-tech in a world dominated by high-resolution digital dashboards.

Plenty of storage space up front. There’s cup holders, a space at the base of the dashboard, ample storage on the doors, and a large storage compartment below the center armrest, plus useful slots below the touchscreen and front. passenger.

Rear seat space is very good. Adults should be able to sit comfortably behind taller adults and also have plenty of headroom.

Peak torque comes in at just 1700rpm, so you don’t have to push yourself too hard to get around with full load on the car and it’s reasonably muted when you crank up the throttle. Instead of needing to make it actually work like a V6 you can rely on mid-range torque.

Since we’ve complained for years about Toyota’s driverless automatic transmission, the inclusion of a regular eight-speed automatic is also a win. It slides smoothly through the ratios when throttle input is light, but is smart enough to stick to gears if you’re in a hurry.

There’s a noticeable change in its behavior when you switch to Sport, and you can control using sequential shift mode if you’re really late for school.

As is the case with all TNGA vehicles, the Kluger strikes a great balance between ride comfort and handling based on stated goals. It’s pretty soft in town, with a leggy feel that helps keep speed bumps, potholes, and city streets peckish.

It feels a bit bouncy at times, but that’s the trade-off we bet most people are willing to make to keep the kids comfortable.

With gentle steering and clear, sweeping views, it’s easy to fit in tight spaces and the camera is so much better than before.

High sidewalls are a useful safeguard against curb impacts, while also helping to improve driving comfort.

At higher speeds, the Kluger is a laid-back, laid-back cruiser. It was very quiet at 100km/h on rough Australian highways and the ride was amazing.

There’s plenty of performance to feel confident overtaking, even with the vehicle fully loaded and the engine running at less than 2000 rpm in 8th gear while cruising. While it’s not as efficient as the lazy diesel (or the hybrid option), it’s a more miserable choice than the V6 it replaces.
