Rihanna is getting ready for the Super Bowl halftime show

PHOENIX –

Rihanna is getting to work ahead of her Super Bowl halftime show, so focused on what she promises to be “a packed show” that her upcoming birthday and Valentine’s Day Her personality almost made her forget.

“The set list is the biggest challenge. It’s the hardest part, the hardest part. Deciding how to maximize 13 minutes but also celebrate — that’s what this show is going to be. It’s going to be a celebration. celebrate my catalog in the best way we could have put it together,” Rihanna said.

At a media preview on Thursday ahead of Sunday’s game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs, the music superstar and new mom announced her arrival – the first live event of her after seven years – feels “as if it could only be now.”

The singer said she was initially unsure about taking on the challenge of performing when she was just three months old and wondered “should I be making such important decisions right now?” I might regret this.”

“But when you become a mother, something happens that makes you feel like you can take on the world, you can do anything,” Rihanna said. “The Super Bowl is one of the biggest stages in the world. It’s scary because I haven’t been on stage in seven years, there’s something so exciting about the challenge of it all.”

A nine-time Grammy Award winner, Rihanna has 14 hits that topped the Billboard Hot 100, including “We Found Love”, “Work”, “Umbrella” and “Disturbia”. She and rapper A$AP Rocky just welcomed their first child.

“At the end of the day, if it fails or succeeds, my name still has to stand. And so I’m really involved in every aspect of whatever I do,” she said.

Midday show sponsor Apple Music hosted a censored event on Thursday, but moderator Nadeska Alexis was the only journalist allowed to question Rihanna.

Rihanna joins the list of popular entertainers who have performed on the Super Bowl’s halftime shows, including Beyonce, Madonna, Coldplay, Katy Perry, U2, Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, Shakira and The Weeknd. Last year, hip-hop was held with Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige and Kendrick Lamar all performed.

The singer previously declined to perform on the 2019 halftime show out of solidarity with Colin Kaepernick. But she said that the timing and circumstances were right for her this time.

Country star Chris Stapleton will sing the national anthem, while R&B legend Babyface will perform “America the Beautiful”. Actor-singer Sheryl Lee Ralph will also perform “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” When asked who they were cheering for on Sunday, Ralph said she supported the Eagles while Stapleton and Babyface said they supported Rihanna.

Ralph applauded the NFL for its work toward inclusion and “representing all” over three songs.

“On one day, Super Bowl Sunday, when 200 million people got together and experienced it here, what a time and a way to bring us all together,” she said. “I’m very pleased and happy to be able to stand on the 40-yard line.”

Babyface said he first started singing “America the Beautiful” as a sophomore in a high school play.

“It’s hard to believe that so many years ago, so many years ago, I was here singing ‘America the Beautiful’,” he said. “Back then, my mother was in the audience and she couldn’t believe that I was standing on the stage singing. It was like a real shy child standing up there to sing. Now think about her being look here and see me at the moment singing ‘America the Beautiful’, it’s a full circle.

Oscar winner Troy Kotsur will perform the national anthem in American Sign Language. Colin Denny will sign “America the Beautiful” and “Lift Every Voice and Sing” will be signed by Justina Miles.

Through an interpreter, Kotsur said performing made him feel more proud to be an American. Miles said “Lift Every Voice and Sing” represents resilience.

“The national anthem has never really resonated with me personally, but the Blacks anthem is truly inspiring and empowering,” says Miles. “This song is so positive and so beautiful. You don’t really hear or see it very often. There are many people who don’t even know the Black national anthem exists. I don’t just want to share this experience with you.” the whole world, but to really bring that empowerment to the millions of black, deaf people around the country who have never seen it before.”

Apple Music this year replaces Pepsi, the company that has sponsored the program for the past 10 years. Terms were not announced, but analysts had expected the league to receive at least $50 million a year for the rights.
