Riot Games sues League of Legends for cheating Mobile Legends: Bang Bang

Riot Games, producer League of Legendsis once again suing a Shanghai-based mobile game developer, this time alleging that the Chinese studio is circumventing the law. League of Legends: Wild RiftiOS and Android adaptations of Riot’s globally popular MOBA, launched in open beta in spring 2021.

The lawsuit was filed Monday in US Central District Court for the Central District of California – the same location where Riot sued Shanghai Moonton Technology in 2018. In the previous case, Riot sued Moonton over their game. Mobile Legends: MOBA 5v5what Riot calls a straight boost League of Legends.

A federal judge declined to hear that case, ruling that China was the better jurisdiction to make the claim. China-based Tencent Holdings, the parent company of Riot Games, later joined and win a judgmentworth $2.9 million, against Moonton and its executives.

The latest complaint involves a game called Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, is currently available in North America in both Google Play and the Apple App Store, where it is ranked 67th in the Strategy category. Riot’s complaint begins as if the court were familiar with Moonton, saying that the US company “seeks to prevent Moonton from continuing its deliberate and longstanding campaign to waive Riot’s high-value rights in the game.” play mobile video games League of Legends: Wild Rift and related content. ”

Riot’s lawsuit notes that, after complaining to Google and Mobile legend removed from the Google Play Store, Moonton surreptitiously released Mobile Legends: Bang Bang“A minimally refined version of Mobile legend,” the complaint says. Since then, “Moonton has updated MLBB to copy expressive elements extended from Wild Rift, continues Riot’s cycle of intellectual property appropriation. ”

The latest action is like a lawsuit brought by Riot back in january against a Vietnamese developer, accusing the studio of blatant copying Total Combat Tactics‘s auto-battle program League of Legends That Riot Games launched on mobile platform in spring 2020.

Given that Riot is suing a foreign corporation and considering the outcome of the previous lawsuit against Moonton, the company could have filed this lawsuit as a procedural step to sue Moonton in China.

However, Riot’s complaints are heavily documented with comparisons to marketing materials, character designs, and even the community’s reaction that Moonton is copying Riot’s work. Riot Games is seeking a jury trial as well as a ban on distribution of Moonton Mobile Legends: Bang Bang in U.S.A.
