Rivian deploys first DC fast chargers as part of Adventure Network for electric trucks

Rivian on Monday announced the first three DC fast charging sites for its Adventure Network to support R1T . electric pickup truck and the upcoming R1S electric SUV.

Three locations opened in California and Colorado this week, Rivian said in a press release. Each will have a charger that delivers more than 200 kilowatts of power, allowing R1T and R1S drivers to recover range of up to 140 miles in 20 minutes, according to the company.

The first site opened to the public on Monday in Salida, Colorado. It features four DC fast chargers for use by Rivian customers, including a trailer slot. The site also has four Level 2 AC destination chargers – called Waypoints by Rivian – that are open to all EV drivers.

The second and third fast-charging sites are located in Inyokern and Bishop, California, opening June 28 and 29, respectively. Rivian notes that the California sites can accommodate visitors to the National Parks Yosemite, Sequoia National Forest, Mammoth Lake, and Death Valley National Forest.

Rivian said its initial goal was 3,500 fast chargers at 600 locations in North America, but did not discuss a timeline for reaching that goal.

The automaker first announced its charging network in 2021, as a sort of foreign partner with the Tesla Supercharger network. It was intended from the beginning to be an exclusive part and partially publicly accessible, with a mix of DC fast chargers and Level 2 AC destination chargers around the adventure spots.

Some of those destination chargers deployed near YosemiteGolden Gate National Recreation Area, and even at glamping sites in Utah.

Rivian is also providing charging hardware for Lake Michigan EV . Sightseeing Route. The first of 15 sites opened in May of this year, with all chargers open to the public. The nonprofit Adopt a Charger will provide technical support and more for these sites as well as the Yosemite and Golden Gate sites.
