ROWING WRAPS ON THE FIRST DAY OF WIRA CHAMPIONS, THE LAST THREE BOATS OF GRAND

GOLD RIVER, California – Varsity 8, Second Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 of Sacramento State, each with the top three in their respective games on the first day of the Interscholastic Rowing Association Championships West (WIRA) on Saturday morning at Lake Natoma.

All three Hornets will advance to the grand final tomorrow morning. The Hornets’ varsity eight came in first for its heat, the varsity eight in second, and the varsity four in third.

The WIRA Championship, an annual event scheduled for the State of Sacramento, has not held every two years because of the pandemic. The event returned this year for the first time since 2019.

Sacramento State’s Varsity 8 finished first in its heat with 6:43.82, and will race in tomorrow’s grand final at 8:20 a.m. The Hornets finished nearly 4 seconds ahead of San Diego (6:47.75) and opened the door in front of UC. San Diego, Seattle, Santa Clara and Saint Mary’s.

Hornet second varsity eight comes in second in its head with a time of 7:06.62, closely behind San Diego (7:04.11). Sacramento State, which finished eight seconds faster than third place UC San Diego, will race in the big five finals at 9 a.m. tomorrow.

Sacramento State varsity four (8:47.72) ranks third in its heat behind San Diego and UC San Diego, and will compete in the finals tomorrow at 10:20 a.m.

Today, the Hornets competed for the first time since the San Diego Crew Classic on March 26-27.
