Rules For Getting Drivers License in and out Of Australia

Driving around Australia can be a unique experience considering what it has to offer especially if you can go to places without a guide! But many travelers don’t know the laws. Is it possible to drive in Australia without a license from overseas? Can foreigners get an Australian driver’s license? Is it necessary to have an International Drivers’ License for Australia?

It’s a smart idea to get an Australian international license for driving (IDP) if you plan on renting or driving a car while abroad. An International Driving Permit, also known as an International Drivers License, will allow you to drive or hire a car in foreign countries easily. You can also use your IDP as an additional ID.

It’s required in many countries but your Australian driver’s license may not suffice to allow you to drive or hire a vehicle in another country. International Drivers Permit (IDP) allows you to drive abroad with your valid driver’s license. If you have a foreign driver’s license, the car rental company will often require it.

An IDP is a translator that converts your driver’s license into a language the destination country can understand. For English and non-English speakers, it is easy to use and understand. However, officially, the document is not recognized and can’t be used in place of a driver’s license.

International Drivers Association uses a standard format from the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic. This is recognized in more than 150 countries. The IDP may not be necessary in some cases as your destination country may accept your driver’s license as valid. Contact the traffic authorities in your destination country to verify if you require an IDP.

Can you start driving in Australia with a foreign license?

Different states have different laws regarding driving in Australia with an international license. However, you can go to Australia with an international license if you are a temporary visitor.

This rule does not apply to New Zealanders. After three months of living in Australia, they are considered interstate visitors. They must apply for a local license.

Also, the laws in the Northern Territory are pretty different. You can drive in Australia with an overseas license for up to three months (6 in Victoria) before needing a local license. Some states will require you to apply for temporary drivers’ licenses if you are temporarily in Australia, but not longer than three months.

How do you apply?

International Driving Permits can only be issued by AANT or its constituent members, the AAA (Australian Automobile Association). You can apply online for an IDP or in person at AANT Shop to obtain one. You can also become a part of the association and get the latest information on your phone so it’s very beneficial if you are a constant traveler. You will just need to provide your email to get the latest news.
