Russia sends more troops to Belarus as fears of new attack grow | Russia-Ukraine war News

Ukraine thinks Belarus could be used by Moscow as a springboard for an attack from the north, opening a new front.

A train carrying Russian troops and equipment has arrived in Belarus amid fears that Moscow could use its ally’s territory to attack Ukraine from the north.

The Belarusian Defense Ministry confirmed the arrival of the troops on Friday and said President Alexander Lukashenko had visited a military base where Russian troops were stationed.

During the meeting, Lukashenko and an unnamed representative of the Russian military discussed joint exercises of the two countries.

The representative said the Russian military is “ready to carry out the tasks as intended”.

The development comes after Belarus, which backed Russia in the war in Ukraine, said on Thursday that it would get more weapons and equipment from its neighbor as the two continue strengthen military cooperation.

The Belarusian Defense Ministry said the goal of forming a joint force was to “strengthen the defense and defense of the Union State”. [of Russia and Belarus]”.

“Personnel, weapons, military and special equipment of the armed forces of the Russian Federation will continue to the Republic of Belarus,” the statement said.

The ministry said the two countries were preparing for joint air force drills without providing any further details.

The Belarusian government has repeatedly stated that it will not participate in Russia’s war in Ukraine.

But Moscow has deployed thousands of forces to Belarusian territory under the pretext of military drills before launching the offensive and then pouring troops into Ukraine when the invasion began on 24 February.

According to Kiev, Russia continues to use Belarusian airspace for drone and missile attacks.

Any new attack on Ukraine from Belarus will open up a new big front in the war that killed tens of thousands of people.

Lukashenko has blamed Western nations for the war, accusing them of seeking to confront Russia and inciting the ongoing bloodshed.

The 67-year-old said that Ukraine has the right to end the conflict by accepting Moscow’s demands – namely to lose the partially occupied regions in eastern and southern Ukraine.
