Fight

  • The Russian army is moving deeper into the encirclement Donbas city of Severodonetsk from the suburbs. Two civilians were killed and five wounded by Russian shelling.
  • All critical infrastructure in Severodonetsk was destroyed and 90% of buildings damaged as Ukrainian forces fought to hold out. Russia tries to capture important city in the eastern region of Luhansk, said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
  • Ukrainian forces counter-attacked in the south, claiming to have repelled Russian troops in Kherson – the only area fully controlled by Russian troops.
  • The Ukrainian military said Russian forces opened fire on 46 communities in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, killing at least three civilians, injuring two others and destroying or damaging 62 civilian buildings.
  • Russia holds a third of the Kharkiv region under its occupation, but Zelenskyy said Ukraine “will definitely liberate the whole territory”.
  • Ukraine’s “liberation” of Donbas is an “unconditional priority” for Moscow, while other Ukrainian territories should decide their own future, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said.

  • The Ukrainian prosecutor’s office in the Donetsk region opened five criminal proceedings over the use of heavy artillery by Russia on May 28 against the town of Toretsk and villages in the Bakhmut and Pokrovsky districts.
  • Ukraine’s Kalush Orchestra, winner of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, raised $900,000 for the country’s military by selling its trophy.

Diplomatic

  • NATO is no longer bound by past commitments to constrain its force deployment in Eastern Europe following the Russian invasion, said Deputy Secretary-General Mircea Geoana.
  • Moscow “disables any content” of the 1997 NATO-Russia Creation Act, under which both sides agree to work to prevent any potential threat to conventional force-building in the united regions of Europe.
  • French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna met the President of Ukraine in Kyiv to express France’s solidarity with Ukraine and greater support for the country.
  • Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said talks last week with the Finnish and Swedish delegations State broadcaster TRT Haber reported that it was not at “expectations” and that Ankara could not say yes to countries “supporting terrorism” joining NATO.
  • Russia is reviewing all international treaties with the United States “in the fields of scientific and educational cooperation” to analyze whether Russia’s participation in various joint organizations is possible.
