Russian missiles hit Black Sea port, Ukraine says

The Ukrainian military said that a Russian missile hit the port of Odesa in Ukraine today.

The strikes hit infrastructure a day after the two warring nations signed an agreement to reopen Black Sea ports to resume grain exports.

“The enemy attacked the Odesa seaport with Kalibr cruise missiles; 2 missiles were shot down by air defense forces; 2 hit the port infrastructure,” the Southern Operations Command wrote on the Telegram messaging app.

Russia and Ukraine signed a landmark agreement in Istanbul on Friday to reopen Ukraine’s Black Sea ports to export millions of tons of grain trapped in Ukrainian silos during Russia’s invasion.

In a statement, Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry called on the United Nations and Turkey to ensure Russia fulfills its commitments under the agreement on a safe corridor for grain exports from Ukraine’s Black Sea ports.

The Russian Defense Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the attack.

US Ambassador to Kyiv Bridget Brink called the strike “outrageous”.

“Russia attacked the port city of Odesa less than 24 hours after signing an agreement to allow the transport of agricultural products for export. The Kremlin continues to weaponize food. Russia must be held accountable,” she said on Twitter.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan oversaw the signing of an agreement allowing Ukraine to resume shipments and Russia to export grain and fertilizer, potentially ending the standoff. stalemate threatens world food security.

Speaking after the deal was signed in Istanbul, President Erdogan said the deal would “prevent billions of people from facing hunger”.
