Ryan Reynolds Could Change Everything For Sens, NHL

Ryan Reynolds might be the coolest person on Earth right now. He was People
Newspapers Sexiest man lives in 2010, and he wants to own an NHL team. Leave the sink for a few minutes.

Reynolds already owns a stake in Wrexham AFC, a fifth-tier football team in the UK, so it’s not like he’s completely new to the world of sports franchise ownership. As Reynolds said above Tonight’s program, he knows that he cannot go alone. The actor from New York will need someone with deep pockets to work with.

Speculation about the value of Senators is everywhere. I’ve seen numbers from $525 million (Forbes, December 2021) up to $665 million (Sportico in the valuation it released last week). With a Memorandum of Understanding signed for a new arena at LeBreton Flats – new ownership will certainly take precedence – I can easily spot $700 million Senators up north.

It’s a lot of talk, and although Reynolds is a Hollywood superstar, he doesn’t have that much money. So for me, this is clearly a passionate play for Reynolds. I think that’s important. If Reynolds openly talks about his desire to buy the Senators, that bodes well for the future because I think it shows Reynolds would feel comfortable playing a mass role on the team.

Imagine a Senator’s marketing campaign centered around Reynolds interacting with players. With his connections – Will Ferrell, anyone? – the possibilities are endless. Reynolds could almost change the entire discourse about the franchise.

How? By making the group cool.

For reasons that I cannot fathom, there are many people in this world who think that celebrities are the epitome of style. They read about them. Small talk about them. And in America, we even vote for them.

Mark my words, if Reynolds buys the Senators, people outside the hockey world will take notice. Shirts will be purchased. Name recognition will increase. You’ll see Brady Tkachuk appear on “The Tonight Show” pulling a shirt over Jimmy Fallon’s head.

Maybe I’m being overly optimistic, but I’ve seen this happen before. Remember when Wayne Gretzky went to Los Angeles to play for the kings? Suddenly hockey was great. Celebrities lined up for home matches, and players made connections they could have only dreamed of just a few months earlier. All thanks to Wayne.

I know Reynolds’ situation is a little different. He’s not actually going to play on ice, but I still think the general public has a desire to be in the same building as a celebrity like him, if only to catch a glimpse of a celebrity.

Remember when Mike Fisher played for the Senators and started dating Carrie Underwood? Her eyes and TV camera were glued to the team’s suite while she was inside the building. I think it was too much, but people absolutely love it when an A-list star like Underwood is present.

I see Reynolds’ potential ownership as an opportunity for the NHL to expand its footprint in the mainstream. We sometimes forget that hockey is still a niche sport, and that is reflected in the way hockey is covered, especially in the United States.

What I really want to see is Reynolds in it for the long haul. He needs to be active from the start. Reynolds will need to maintain that enthusiasm, especially in Ottawa. The city needs an owner who can communicate with the fan base and listen to their concerns. The senator’s fans have been ignored for too long, and the healing process is continuing.

I think Reynolds would be a welcome addition to the NHL. He will deliver value far beyond the dollars he chooses to invest. Let’s hope he finds the right combination to make it happen.
