Sadiq Khan asks Met Police to restore ‘trust and confidence’ after latest scandal

London Mayor Sadiq Khan on Wednesday said the head of the Metropolitan Police has “day and week” to map out a reform agenda following the latest scandal aimed at tarnishing the force’s reputation.

The Independent Office of Police Conduct last week released what it calls “Shocking” Evidence Persistent and widespread bullying, deviance, homophobia and racism among officers on several teams at Charing Cross police station in central London. The following findings Scandal including the rape and murder of Sarah Everard in Clapham, south London, last March by Wayne Couzens, a serving Met cop.

Khan told Radio 4’s Today program in which he met Cressida Dick, commissioner, after the release of the IOPC report on February 1 and told her she had to make a plan to restore confidence in the force at the meeting. next side. When asked if this will happen, he said: “It’s the day and the week.”

Dick was forced to apologize repeatedly for the misconduct of her officers. As with Everard’s murder, the Met has been criticized for accused of racism – which it denies – during the investigation into the disappearances of Nicole Smallman and Bibaa Henry, two half-sisters who are later found murdered. Two Met officers have been found guilty of misconduct in the office for taking and sharing images of women’s bodies.

Dick was also criticized a lot because of her decision to delay an investigation into allegations of lockout parties in Whitehall.

Khan told the BBC he wanted Dick to draw up a plan to “regain the trust and confidence” that had been “knocked and broken as a result of these circumstances”.

“If it is the case that Londoners, whether you are a woman or a girl, a person of color or a member of the LGBT+ community, do not trust the police service when you are a victim of crime. , to continue when you’re a witness to a crime, to go ahead and join the police service, that’s a problem now,” he said. “I’m not willing to wait.”

Khan serves as London’s crime and police commissioner and in September agreed to a two-year extension to Dick’s term, which expires in April. Because the Met is in charge. national responsibility, the commissioner is also accountable to the secretary of the interior, who has ultimate authority to hire or fire her.

Khan did not specify what action he would take if he found Dick’s plan unsatisfactory, although he said he would not “keep silent” about it.

He added: “If there are examples of cultural practices or unacceptable behaviour, I have to take into account the people Londoners expect to be dealt with.”

The Metropolitan Police did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the mayor’s interview.

The Interior Department reiterated comments last week by Priti Patel, the interior secretary, condemning the behavior of “sick officers” at Charing Cross and demanding higher standards across the force.
