Saints are considered leaders for Derek Carr
Derek Carr remained in New Orleans for the second day of this Raiders-approved visit. After Carr-Saints . meeting ends around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nick Underhill note The meeting continued on Thursday.
Dennis Allen and Saints brass went to dinner with Carr Wednesday night, according to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport, who added? New Orleans is considered the frontrunner to land the nine-year veteran. The Raiders and Saints haven’t fully agreed on terms yet, but NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero tweets the framework of an agreement is in place.
Initially, the Raiders were unprepared to allow Carr to talk to any team which did not agree on commercial terms. By extending that baseline to pursuers who were in the ballpark of Las Vegas’ preferred compensation, a visit was successful. Carr used a no-trade clause, giving him the ability to cancel the Raiders-Saints deal. No deal is expected to be finalized by Thursday, Rapoport added.
There are six days left until Carr receives a $40.4 million bail. The Raiders won’t pay that amount for their longtime quarterback, which would result in a sale or release. The Saints, who have Carr interest generates buzz at the Senior Bowl, are pretty much the de facto leaders here as no other team is allowed to talk to Carr. Concerns about Carr’s agent using negotiations to gauge free agent interest helped lead to narrower parameters for visits. Although Carr has only spoken to the Saints, other teams have already looked into this free agent early sweepstakes.
The commanders and the jets were mentioned as a suitor at the end of last monthand the jets are Carr test. The Commanders are taking an off-season course that’s a bit unexpected, at least compared to how they’ve conducted in recent seasons. Expected to drop more than $26 million by release Carson WentzWashington is planning to provide Sam Howell One long-term consideration as a potential starter. The team is still tracking veterans, but not to the same extent as 2022. The commanders’ connections to nearly every potential vet emerged last year, leading to the Wentz swap. Although Howell was a fifth-round pick and made a one-off appearance as a rookie, he seems to have a good chance of being Washington’s 2023 starter.
Expected to dive deeper into the veteran QB pool, the Jets will need to determine if they want to go after Carr now or wait for the same Aaron Rodgers, Jimmy Garoppolo or another potentially available branch. The Raiders have also been connected to Garoppolo and Rodgers, raising the stakes for a team of Jets that have been tied to veterinary QBs for weeks.
New Orleans has James Winston under contract until 2023, but after the bench Drew Brees‘ original successor, the Saints should not retain him. Not when they exceed $60 million. As of mid-January, no Andy Dalton Negotiations also took place. While the Saints received the first pick from the Broncos in the Sean Payton trade, that pick comes in at 29th overall. The top four QBs of this draft are likely to be gone by that point, and a veteran looks like a better addition to the Saints’ experienced roster anyway.
