As you may recall, Super Smash Bros. to be “last mission” assigned to Masahiro Sakurai of the late Satoru Iwata.

The Switch entry became a huge hit and has now sold over 25 million copies worldwide. After the game shipped, Sakurai’s “next mission” was to release all of the DLC, and he’s now done that as well.

Is the last mission completed then? In an email interview with IGN earlier this month, Sakurai confirmed that he had completed Iwata’s quest:

“Yes, I believe I was able to fully complete this quest.”

As for what comes next, Sakurai is still not entirely sure about her future. In the same interview, he reiterated how if Nintendo asked him to make another Smash game, he’ll have to think about it.

At the same time, he “may not necessarily continue” the path of making more games, but could still stay in the game industry. He wants to “keep an open mind” and consider all the possibilities of what could happen next.

At least for now Sakurai has completed this “final mission” and we’re sure Iwata would be very proud.
