San Antonio’s handling of Josh Primo almost fooled me too

Complimenting a sports organization for responsibly handling sexual misconduct is rare, so if you’re willing to commend a team before any details are released – even when they’ve brought up a player, executive or coach with a problem – it’s best to wait. I almost wrote that San Antonio Spurs as my colleague DJ Dunsonwho commended the team for parting ways with Josh Primo on the draw before we knew he had allegedly been in contact with women, including the team’s staff psychologist, cauthen.

The more cases like this arise, the more skeptical I am of any party “doing the right thing” – outside of the brave victim reporting the violation, of course. Given San Antonio’s situation, it seems a bit too hard to try to get through a potential lawsuit to give them any flowers for the decoy with a property they’ve invested so much money in. Okay.

Good, in a press conference on Thursday along with Cauthen and her attorney, Tony Buzbee, an attorney who also represented most of the women accusing Deshaun Watson of sexual misconduct, both alleging that San Antonio failed to respond appropriately when she informed inform them of Primo’s recidivism. Both the team and the liberty guard are being sued for alleged indecency, according to a lawsuit filed Thursday in Bexar County, Texas.

Primo’s attorney, William J. Briggs II, released a long statement on behalf of its clients disavow any wrongdoing. Declare Part read:

Josh Primo is in the early stages of a promising career and has been devastated by these false accusations and released by Spurs. He is undergoing treatment to deal with the injury caused to him by Dr. Cauthen’s false accusations, in addition to the previous trauma he suffered as a child. He looks forward to making a name for himself and moving forward with his NBA career. “

According to the lawsuit, Cauthen informed GM Brian Wright about Primo in January before having a meeting with Wright about it in March, where she expressed discomfort at working with the rookie guard alone.

Then in April, after teams repeatedly called for her to meet with Primo, she informed Wright of her concerns and frustrations about his treatment, the suit said. After Wright asked her what “consequences” she felt would be appropriate, she told him the team needed to resolve the situation, and GM replied that the franchise’s legal team would be in touch.

She then met with lawyers and legal counsel for Spurs, who revealed to her that an investigation would be opened, saying she should avoid contact with Primo and that an investigation was imminent. out, according to the lawsuit.

When she asked about the status of the investigation a week later, the team’s deputy general counsel and head of human resources said that her Primo would continue to participate in team activities and suggested that she should work from home, according to the lawsuit.

When Cauthen met with team representatives again in June, they said they spoke with Primo and wondered if she would be available to chat with him, the suit said. She refused to attend a meeting with her alleged harasser.

And this is not in the suit, but my opinion: Who can blame her?

At a meeting later that same month, the Spurs dynamic duo revealed to Cauthen that the team was considering fixes to promptly report issues, according to the lawsuit. She was even told that head coach Gregg Popovich was aware of the situation and “wants her to do it right”.

The team did not respond to a request for comment from The Athletic.

So if these allegations are true, Spurs knew about Primo more than 10 months ago, didn’t take the claims of a team member seriously, and repeatedly asked her to meet a bully. alleging abuse, then suggest she avoid him and work from home, give some fake investigation, ask her to talk about it, suggest fake fixes to the system broke their relationship and only cut ties with the employee at issue just a week before a lawsuit was announced.

Now that sounds more like the poor, lost, inept sports organizations I know and loathe.
