Sanofi pushes back the release of Covid vaccine

France’s Sanofi has pushed back the expected approval date for its long-awaited vaccine against Covid-19 after a watchdog asked it to extend the late-stage clinical trial.

The group, one of the world’s largest vaccine manufacturers, said on Wednesday that it would likely hit the market in the first quarter of 2022, rather than this year.

The advisory board overseeing the trial wants to wait until more enrollees have contracted Covid to increase the amount of data available.

Sanofi, which has partnered with GlaxoSmithKline on its Covid-19 shot machine, says a separate trial examining the effectiveness of the shot as a booster has shown positive results across all age groups. It has “good safety and tolerability” by increasing neutralizing antibodies “about 9 to 43 times”.

This news is another sign that BioNTech/Pfizer and Moderna have earned the top spot in the Covid-19 vaccine market by releasing their products faster than incumbents like Sanofi. The French group hopes to recover by capturing a significant portion of the booster market.
