School bus accident: Driver safely removed children from stalled bus minutes before Metra train collision in Orlando Park

ORLAND PARK, Ill. (WLS) – A school bus driver is being hailed as a hero after she was able to get children out of a bus that stalled before it was hit by a train in suburban Orlando Park. crashed on Friday.

The incident happened shortly after 2:30 p.m. Friday on 167th Street, not too far from U.S. 6th Street and where the school bus had just picked up students from St. Michael.

“Our students come home from school,” said Principal Paul Smith of St. Michael said. “That’s definitely her main focus, to make sure the kids are safe.”

Authorities said five children were on the train when the bus driver stopped at the tracks, just as she was required to do.

But when she tried to go, the bus wouldn’t move, stopping on the tracks seconds before an oncoming train to Chicago was approaching.

“It’s a very scary situation for anyone. It could be much worse,” Smith said. “People keep a calm head and follow instructions, and follow the training they have.”

And that training session helped the driver get the students off the bus safely before the collision.

“She kept her composure and she played a great role in keeping those kids safe,” Moore said.

No one got hurt. Parents were immediately notified and students even hugged the driver who saved their lives.

Smith said: “It was a real pleasure to see them, right before they went home to their parents, hug and thank each other for the great results of her actions.
