Sean McVay wishes he had ‘better face-to-face communication’ with Jared Goff
Los Angeles Rams Head coach Sean McVay said recently he wished he handled things differently than he does now Detroit Lion QB (and old Ram) Jared Goff.
The Rams traded Goff with the Lions in March 2021, taking in a quarter of the profit Matthew Stafford exchange. The deal, which helped bring the Rams’ to their Super Bowl victory, comes after Los Angeles failed to commit to picking Goff in its starting quarterback, amid reports that the relationship The relationship between Goff and McVay is not so good.
In a recent issue of “Open Mike Podcast,” McVay said he wished he handled the situation differently.
“It’s been a tough one for me because what’s more important than anything is being a good communicator — being clear, open, and honest,” McVay said on the podcast. “Make sure people don’t let their guard down and really respect the players and coaches for what they have to do. And I wish there had been better face-to-face communication.
“One thing that hurts me is that I never want anything to be misunderstood about my appreciation, my respect for Jared. Was it a difficult decision? Yes. Are there some things that I could better address in terms of the clarity provided to him?
“If I have it again, what I’m going to do is, before I go to Cabo, when it’s possible, okay, if Matthew Stafford is available, if there are other midfielders available, that’s going to be what we do. I’ll find out – you sit down with him, you look him in the eye, you tell him that instead of calling him and arranging a meeting that was my intention when I got back from Cabo. “
Goff texted McVay to congratulate him after the Super Bowl and commented before the game that he was happy for his former teammates.
McVay also emphasized that he continues to have a good relationship with Goff.
McVay said: “(Goff) certainly as hell did a lot of good. “And I think what shows he’s really a student, an act of class, is one of the best text messages I got after the Super Bowl from Jared Goff. And so, I think. The further we go, the more appreciative we will be for the four wonderful years we’ve had together – because there have been so many really good times.… But all in all, just delivery. better, clearer, is what I want.”
In his first season with the Lions, Goff played 14 games, completing 332 of 494 passes for 3,245 yards, with 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions.
