Searching for Elton Stephens kidnapper who was mistakenly released from prison
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is asking for public assistance in locating an inmate who was released from prison by mistake. Matthew Amos Burke, 35, of Remlap, has been released from the House Jefferson County Jail in Birmingham on Friday, December 10. He is described as approximately 5 feet, 7 inches tall, 170 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes. He was accused of kidnapping businessman Elton B. Stephens Jr. in Birmingham in 2020. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said neighboring agencies failed to provide documentation to notify prison staff that Burke would not be released and had been sentenced by another court. He has ties to the Fultondale, Tarrant and Remlap communities. Anyone who sees Burke should call 911.

Burke was detained there after he was transferred from a neighboring agency to stand trial. He was accused of kidnapping businessman Elton B. Stephens Jr. in Birmingham in 2020.
Burke filed charges against the state, which were dismissed after he appeared in court on Friday.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said the neighborhood agency failed to provide documentation to warn prison staff that Burke would not be released and had been convicted by another court.
Monday afternoon, it was discovered that Burke was supposed to be held for transfer to prison, where he was to serve a sentence that had already been imposed.
He has connections to the Fultondale, Tarrant and Remlap communities.
