See why the Sony XB13 speaker is perfect for spring break travel

I hope to go to the park, roll down all the windows, and drive there Asbury Park (or another way favorite beach town) as soon as anyone else. And with mine telephonea great pair of sunglasses and my best swimming trunksI am also packing a small but powerful speaker with me.

The Sony XB13 is ours Best travel pick for Bluetooth speakers. It excels as an ultraportable option with its surprisingly long battery life and the ability to deliver powerful sound. Oh, and it’s just $59.99 — or at least $48 when it’s on sale, as it is now — and comes in a variety of fun colors: black, coral pink, light blue, powder blue, or blue taupe. Let’s take a look at why it’s the perfect escape route, especially when you’re considering packing for spring break.

The perfect companion for spring break

This small but powerful Bluetooth speaker is the perfect addition to your spring break packing list. Keep your music going all day long with long battery life, durability, and crisp sound.

Sony’s XB13 about the size of a pint, measuring just over 4 inches tall. Depending on the size of your hand, it reflects the size of a closed fist and is smaller than the size of a standard coffee cup. You can throw it at a backpackOne SuitcaseOne merchandise bags or even a fanny pack. Its outstanding portability means it can take the trip with you, whether you’re flying or driving to your destination. spring break destination.

And here’s the starting point: A color-matched fabric strap comes pre-installed on the speaker, which means it can act as a carabiner for just about anything. I attached the speaker to my backpack for hiking. The options are endless, as it is made of quite durable fabric. I’ve got mine XB13 for almost a year, and after many drops, it has not been scratched and the fabric strap is still intact.

It can handle a dip in the pool or a dance party in the rain as it carries an IPX7 rating – in other words, it can last up to 30 minutes in almost a meter of water. I wouldn’t recommend intentionally dropping it into a pool or a body of water, but it does have some protection against it. It also has some protection against the sun with a special UV coating. Sonos has a similar tier on top of the larger (and more expensive) tier. $399 Moveand it’s mainly there to keep distortion or cracks from appearing on the exterior paintwork. There’s also a bunch of rubber bands on the bottom of the XB13, which helps keep it firmly in place regardless of how much bass on your track.

Sony’s design team has been quite smart with the control buttons and charging port. You’ll find tactile buttons built into the rubber band for volume, playback, power, and Bluetooth pairing along the bottom of the speaker. Hidden under an easily accessible flap, which also keeps it protected, is a USB-C port for charging.

I’m a bit skeptical that Sony promises a runtime of 16 hours on the XB13, especially considering the small size of this Bluetooth speaker. But in my battery test, the XB13 burst for 15 hours. That’s an hour below the promised battery life but still lasts longer than most Bluetooth speakers, including our other standout picks in our guide to the best Bluetooth speakers.

It’s the long playtime for a trip, a long car ride, a day at the beach or even a day at the villa. When it’s time to recharge, you can simply plug in the included USB-C cable. Be aware, however, that the one included is relatively short.

Powering the sound on the XB13 are top-panel speakers and a passive bass radiator that helps channel sound out of the bottom of the device. That’s a lot of tech jargon, but what you need to know is that it produces a clear and rich sound. It can fill a small-sized space with sound. Even outdoors in less than perfect conditions, it can still produce sound suitable for a small group or for individual listening.

Whether I’m playing “Good 4 U” by Olivia Rodrigoa deep cut by Bruce Springsteen or Dua Lipa’s “New Rule”, the sound is vibrant and aims to enjoy all aspects of the music evenly. It’s an impressive sounding mix, whether it’s vocals, an array of guitars, punchy bass, or even some electrically managed sounds. In my listening experience, I didn’t hear any distortion or splitting regardless of the volume.

If you want a bigger, more substantial sound – for example, if you’re traveling with a large group or want to fill a larger space with music – you can pair multiple XB13s together. Two XB13 devices paired will give you much louder stereo sound and volume.

For $59.99 – or more likely under $50 when it’s on sale – XB13 is a great speaker for everyday use or an epic adventure that takes you to a new (or familiar) place. Not only is it a lightweight, durable design that can match your personality with color, but it will last for countless hours and produce great sound.

If you’re looking for a little extra protection for your XB13 as you take it on the road – or in the air – this spring break, a carry case could be the perfect addition to your kit.

Travel case for your portable speaker

Although the XB13 is very durable, this compact carrying case can give you extra peace of mind and protect it from the constriction of packed luggage.
