Senate passes major gun law but does not ban assault weapons

Thursday is a big day for gun safety and control laws in New York and the United States. Earlier Thursday, the Supreme Court overturned a NY law that regulates who can carry a concealed weapon in public. NBC New York. The grant is the first major gun control decision by the court in a long time. Experts expect the ruling to give preference to other cities like Boston and Los Angeles. Hours later, the Senate also made a historic decision on gun safety across the country by passing a bipartisan bill.

Senate passes gun safety law with 65-33 votes

Fifteen Republicans joined Democrats to bring the final vote to 65-33 on Thursday night. The next step is to sign it from the House, then a signature from President Joe Biden will seal the deal. The measure addresses several key areas, including funding “mental health, school safety, and crisis intervention programs,” each CNN. In addition, the measure seeks to include juvenile records in the National Instant Criminal Background Check System by providing incentives for states.

A notable victory for Democrats came with the bill’s controls on gun purchases by adults aged 18 to 21. Previously, the law barred a person from buying a firearm if a court found them violent. family power in certain circumstances. Cases include someone living with a partner (with or without children) or married. Now, with Senate approval, the bipartisan bill would expand cases to include convicted abusers who are in “a serious continuing relationship.” As of tonight, abusers who are not living together or married are still allowed to buy guns, but that no longer applies.

Victory does not solve the problem of increased attacks with offensive weapons

While the bill is a victory, it does not address the growing use of semi-automatic weapons in public spaces. Texas is still mourning 19 children and two teachers who went missing at the gunpoint of 18-year-old Salvador Ramos in May. This week, Mayor Don McLaughlin of Uvalde announced the city plans to demolish Robb Elementary School.

“My understanding – I have discussed it with the superintendent – that school will be demolished,” the mayor said. You can never ask a child to go back or a teacher to go back to that school ever.”

Not long before that, Uvalde, an 18-year-old white man, had deliberately planned to attack a predominantly black neighborhood in Buffalo, New York. While streaming on Twitch, Payton Gendron walked into a Tops grocery store one Sunday and shot 13 people, killing 10. Eleven of the people Payton shot were Black.

Now that the Senate has taken this step, the House will have its turn on Friday.
