Sennheiser’s consumer audio division can under new management, but that hasn’t stopped the company from launching new products. The Sennheiser CX and CX Plus was recently launched in India and both compete with current options in the mid-range TWS segment from SAMSUNG, OnePlusand Jabra. Today, I am reviewing the more expensive and better equipped of the two, Sennheiser CX Plus true wireless headphones.

Officially priced at Rs. 14,990 in India (about Rs 12,990 online), the Sennheiser CX Plus are an impressive pair of truly wireless earbuds. You get active noise cancellation, app support, and features like the Qualcomm aptX adaptive Bluetooth codec, making this a compelling proposition under Rs. 15,000. However, is the sound quality up to expectations? Find out in this review.

Sennheiser CX Plus is available in black and white in India

Sennheiser CX Plus is a well-equipped pair of true wireless headphones

Sennheiser has been in the personal audio business for a long time, but its true wireless range has not received much acclaim outside of Momentum True Wireless 2, in my opinion. With the CX Plus, Sennheiser hopes to make a mark in the much more competitive mid-range TWS segment, and promises plenty of features for an asking price of Rs. 12,990.

With a design similar to that of Sennheiser CX400BT (Review), the Sennheiser CX Plus is significantly larger than competing options in its price segment, such as Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 (Review) and Jabra Elite 85t (Review). Not only the headset is quite bulky, but the charging box is also significantly wider.

The headphones come in two colors, white and black. Despite their size, the device looks and feels good. The outer parts of the headphones are glossy, with the Sennheiser logo and touch-sensitive playback controls on each. The inner sides of the earphones have contacts for charging and a proximity sensor to automatically play or pause music depending on when the headset is put on or removed.

I found the earbuds’ fit comfortable enough, although their slightly unwieldy shape makes them stick out a bit out of your ears. They stayed in place while walking and climbing stairs, and while the fit always felt a bit precarious, I didn’t really face any situations where the headphones could drop. go out. Four pairs of silicone ear tips of different sizes are included in the box, along with a short USB Type-A to Type-C charging cable. The headphones are IPX4 rated for water resistance.

The Sennheiser CX Plus’s charging case is large, similar to that of the CX400BT, and therefore, quite difficult to stash in a trouser pocket along with anything else like a wallet or smartphone. The USB Type-C port is on the back and there’s an LED indicator on the front. Overall, the headphones stick to Sennheiser’s classic style for TWS headphones.

The touch controls on the Sennheiser CX Plus true wireless headphones are customizable via the accompanying app. You can control playback, volume, ANC and listen-through modes, and call up the default voice assistant on your paired smartphone through various touches. All of these gestures work reliably, and I quite like the ease with which I can operate the headset without pulling out my smartphone.

In addition to control customizations, the Sennheiser Smart Control companion app (available for iOS and Android) allows you to manage paired devices, make changes to the equalizer, toggle ANC and listen-through, etc. It’s well designed and easy to use, covers almost everything. you need to do with headphones.

Sennheiser CX Plus headphones are a bit bulky and therefore feel a bit unwieldy when worn

Sennheiser CX Plus is equipped with 7mm dynamic drivers and has a frequency response range of 5-21,000Hz. In terms of connectivity, the headset uses Bluetooth 5, supports SBC, AAC, aptX and aptX Adaptive Bluetooth codecs.

The battery life on the Sennheiser CX Plus is quite suitable for the price. The headphones ran for about five hours with ANC turned on and the volume at a moderate level. The case added about two and a half times the additional charge, for a total run time of about 18 hours per charge cycle. This is what to expect from a TWS headset in this price range. This performance is actually slightly better than what I got with Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 and roughly equal to what OnePlus Buds Pro suggestions.

Very good sound and ANC performance on Sennheiser CX Plus

For the market price of Rs. 12,990, the Sennheiser CX Plus offers a lot including lots of customization, good active noise cancellation and most importantly very good sound quality for the price. Support for the adaptive Qualcomm aptX and aptX Bluetooth codecs for better sound when paired with a supported device.

The Sennheiser CX Plus is a no-nonsense true wireless headset to its core, and that shows in the sound quality. Listening to Trans-X’s Live On Video (Claptone Remix) is an energizing experience from the start, with the headphones’ natural adjustability providing plenty of attack and boost. There’s a subtle bump in the lows that produce a very subtle and enjoyable bass. The midrange also looks impressive, while the treble is a bit comfortable. I also liked how the Sennheiser CX Plus was able to keep up with the fast pace of this track with ease.

This coherence and tempo is also evident in other fast-paced, rhythmic songs like The Chemical Brothers’ Go and Velvetine’s The Great Split (Soundprank Remix). The sound is fast and engaging, making this type of bass-focused song an absolute pleasure to listen to.

Very good sound quality and ANC performance on Sennheiser CX Plus

With slower-paced tracks, such as Opposite the Ways of Brasstracks, Sennheiser CX Plus allows detail in the low and mid-range to be clearly represented. Soulful saxophone riffs blend perfectly with hip-hop beats and rap verses. While the tight and well-tuned bass kept my attention on everything else, it wasn’t difficult to focus on any of the many elements of this track.

This level of detail is especially noticeable when using the Sennheiser CX Plus with an Android smartphone, allowing it to benefit from the Qualcomm aptX Adaptive Bluetooth codec. When using iPhone, the headset retains the same general sound and feel characteristics, but there is a noticeable difference in sound detail. I’ve also used these headphones to listen to audio books, and while the experience is decent, the Sennheiser CX Plus is definitely tuned to the music above all else.

The active noise cancellation (ANC) performance on the Sennheiser CX Plus is largely on par with what I’ve heard on other true wireless headphones priced under Rs. 15,000. It was optimized for indoor use, where it did a great job of reducing noise levels in typical office environments such as central air conditioning hum and even hum in common areas. It also feels noticeably lighter.

The ANC on these headphones has certainly made music a lot easier to listen to, both indoors and outdoors, and doesn’t compromise on sound quality. Pass-through mode on the Sennheiser CX Plus comes into play when needed, and a helpful option in the app lets you choose whether to resume audio playback or pause when pass-through mode is activated.

Connection stability on Sennheiser CX Plus is good, with the headset working stably at a distance of up to 4m from the source device. Call quality indoors was decent and was tolerable outdoors for short calls, although my voice sounded a bit overwhelming to callers when I was in noisy urban areas.

Identify

Sennheiser has been relatively quiet in the mid-range true wireless segment in India for a while, but the CX Plus marks a strong comeback for the long-standing and highly regarded brand. These headphones are feature-rich, well-tuned in terms of sound quality, and priced to match what’s on offer, making this a very good option if you’re on a budget around Rs. 15,000. These are music-focused headphones and are ideal for anyone looking for subtle bass and plenty of detail in their sound.

The Sennheiser CX Plus’ headphones and charging case are a bit bulky, but that’s a problem when it comes to cons. The rich ANC and a very good companion app are helpful bonuses, making this TWS headset one of my top picks for its price point. Consider Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 if you have a Samsung smartphone or OnePlus Buds Pro if you want to spend a little less, but for all other use cases, Sennheiser CX Plus is the right choice.
