Shakur Stevenson on his goals for 2023: Fight Vasiliy Lomachenko, then Gervonta Davis and more | boxing news

Shakur Stevenson has set his sights for 2023: fighting Vasiliy Lomachenko, then Gervonta Davis and a spot at the top of the list in pounds.

Stevenson is possibly one of the most talented boxers in America. In 2023, he intends to prove it. He’s going to move up to lightweight. As the unified world champion in the super featherweight event, he couldn’t put on weight for his final bout, a sign that it was time to move on.

“It’s been a great year. I had a small hiccup not gaining weight. I still don’t like it but I can’t stop there,” Stevenson said. Sports sky. “It will never happen again in my career.”

Looking back at his own 2022, he chose the glorious victory over Oscar Valdez as the highlight.

“He’s a name everyone sees, a world champion who has beaten so many different people and defended his title many times. I don’t think I’ve received the credit I deserve. for that, with him being an undefeated guy in his prime guys.

Johnny Nelson and Gary Logan discuss which fight they would most like to see in 2023.

“Knock the door [Miguel] Berchelt coming off the pitch was a highlight of his career and I think just do it when Berchelt is a beatable, he’s a champion, you have to respect Valdez overall.

“I think it was a very underrated performance. I don’t think I got the credit it deserves. It is. I’m still working. I’m going to knock down the door.”

Although Stevenson has yet to fight at lightweight, he has found it difficult to take down opponents for his next bout.

“We looked up some of the top guys in lightweight and they actually turned me down,” he said. “People like Isaac Cruz rejected me, it was a top man who fought the ‘Tank’ [Gervonta Davis].

“It’s weird that they’d turn down a guy who’s never fought at 135 lbs. The thing is, we’re not going to stumble.”

He is confident that with a bout in the lightweight he will be able to place himself in one of the major championships.

“I didn’t have to wait too long. Maybe a match and then a title fight,” he said. “I will fight for the next title if I can.

“The heads are busy right now. Devin [Haney] will fight [Vasiliy] Lomachenko. The ‘tank’ is about to have two battles. So obviously we can’t do those skirmishes right now so I’ll choose the next available option.”

That could lead him to Jamaine Ortiz, who caused Lomachenko a series of problems when they engaged in October.

“Jamaine Ortiz is on the list. I personally know him,” Stevenson said. “He won’t say no. He won’t hide from anyone.

Johnny Nelson and Gary Logan debate whether Savannah Marshall’s epic clash with Claressa Shields is the best match of 2022.

“He did a great job with Lomachenko. He was just a frontrunner. I didn’t take anything from him. I already knew he was a tough fight for anyone. He weighed 135. lbs.”

But Stevenson added: “He’s the lead, I think he’ll start the first six innings very hot. Then the next six innings he’ll fall.

“The world wants to see it just based on what he did to Lomachenko. But Lomachenko is an older man, he’s going downhill. I’m like a young killer. Everyone It wouldn’t be the same if we fought like that.”

Although Lomachenko is considering taking on Devin Haney, the undisputed lightweight champion, Stevenson still hopes to fight the Ukrainian great in 2023.

“Maybe I’ll fight Lomachenko,” he explained. “It could be after he fights Haney, I think he and I can fight. I know Devin has a plan to gain 140 lbs.

“Maybe I’ll fight him for an empty title.”

Stevenson has lofty goals for the coming year. “Later [Lomachenko] I want to fight ‘Tanks’,” he noted. “I want to fight ‘Tanks’, that’s who I would fight after Lomachenko, if I could choose my year.”

At the end of 2023, he said: “I think I’m going to fight for third place on the pound list. I just know I’m going to be one of the best young boxers, which I yes, in the sport of boxing. But I’m going to take my career to the next level. I’m ready for the big pay-per-view fights, I’m ready to see the big names. do not want to come into this department and do not fight against people who are supposed to be people.

“I’m locked, I’ll show everyone why I’m the truth.”
