Sharks sever ties with Evander Kane

SAN JOSE, Calif. –

The San Jose Sharks have asked Evander Kane to give up unconditionally with the intention of terminating the remainder of his seven-year, $49 million contract.

The Sharks said Saturday that it took the action because Kane violated COVID-19 protocols in the AHL where he currently plays for Barracuda. The team said they would have no further comment.

Termination of the contract will cost Kane the remaining $22.9 million from the contract he signed in May 2018.

Kane’s agent, Dan Milstein, said: “We are aware of the Sharks’ decision to include Evander on a termination waiver. “If he clears up, we will file a complaint. Sharks do not have sufficient grounds to take this action.”

The NHLPA released a statement on Twitter saying the union also “intends to challenge any such action by filing a complaint.”

The move ends a months-long saga regarding Kane’s condition with the Sharks. He faces charges of gambling on games, knowingly losing games he bets on, as well as sexual and physical abuse from estranged wife Anna over the summer.

The NHL investigated and found no evidence to support those allegations but suspended Kane 21 games for submitting a fake COVID-19 vaccination card.

When the suspension was lifted in late November, the Sharks placed Kane on a waiver and sent him to the AHL when he was unclaimed.

Kane had eight points in five games against San Jose Barracuda in the AHL before being included in the AHL’s COVID-19 protocols on December 22.

30-year-old Kane had 22 goals and 22 assists in 56 games last season for the Sharks. Kane has also played for the Atlanta/Winnipeg and Buffalo franchises since being drafted by the Fourth Thrashers in 2009.

Kane has 264 goals and 242 assists in 769 career games.
