Sheriff: Man threatens to kill dog to get girlfriend to text back | News
Authorities in Genesee County are investigating a possible case of animal abuse involving a dog.
Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson said the incident began with a domestic argument between Nick Mendoza, the dog’s owner, and a woman.
Mendoza texted his girlfriend threatening photos of the dog including one showing a knife against the dog’s neck and what appeared to be a wound on the dog’s head.
“He then sends these text messages, ‘answer the phone before this dog dies.’ I’ve seen a lot of things now, not trying to be light-hearted, but when you have animals or kids in the house that takes it to the next level,” Swanson said.
Swanson said Mendoza sent another text, “the dog will die in a few minutes if you don’t reply.”
Mendoza was sent to prison and charged with animal torture, witness intimidation and as a frequent offender. The dog is currently in the custody of the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office.
