Should the Panthers put more pressure on Baker Mayfield?

The Carolina Panthers in the middle of midfield battle. All signs, though, point to Baker Mayfield is their starter, isn’t it Sam Darnold.

Mayfield represented with the top offensive unit in the Panthers’ pre-season opener against Washington Commanders. He’s also captured the majority of the moments with the attackers in the training camp practices to date.

Emmanuel Acho wasn’t sure the Panthers were taking the right approach, and he compared Mayfield to a certain superhero to explain why.

“Baker Mayfield is like the Incredible Hulk,” Acho said in “Speak for Yourself” on Tuesday. “When Incredible Hulk’s tenses up, he activates a superpower. In the same breath, when Baker Mayfield challenges it, it activates his superpower.”

Acho has cited practically every season of Mayfield’s career since he was a college freshman and won quarterback starting at Texas Technology like a walk. Acho used Mayfield’s time at Oklahomawhere he had to win the job that started as a walk-in before winning over Heisman is more proof.

inside NFLAcho points to Mayfield’s rookie and third season with Cleveland Browns because he even thrives when challenged. Mayfield had to defeat Tyrod Taylor to earn his starter job as a rookie, and in the third season he had to prove himself after a disappointing second year.

Acho believes Mayfield hasn’t been challenged enough in his second and fourth seasons with the Browns, both of which ended in failed seasons. Acho thinks Carolina may be making the same mistake.

“Now, get into the Carolina Panthers,” Acho said. “Challenge Baker Mayfield so we can see the Incredible Hulk. They don’t. They give him the job, it seems.”

Joy Taylor took a different approach. She’s not debating whether the Panthers are taking the right or wrong approach. Instead, she believes Mayfield needs to change his approach.

“I can’t really meet someone where I have to play mind games to do their job,” Taylor said. “You know what my motivation is? It’s the check you get every two weeks. No one needs to tell me to go do my job because I get paid to do my job, so here I am. will do my job. That’s how I’m wired. And that’s how I want my quarterback to be wired.”

The upcoming season is an important one for Mayfield. He is in the final season of his rookie contract and was only traded for a conditional pick in the fifth round in July, suggesting that he may need to prove himself. starting this season.

Taylor wants Mayfield to drop the “below” mentality because he’s already proven enough of it.

“The challenge is you’re an NFL quarterback,” Taylor said. “It’s an extremely competitive position. There aren’t many jobs like that in the world. That must be your motivation.

“I hear you, but you’re the #1 pick overall. You’re the winner of the Heisman Trophy. You’re not an underdog anymore, my boy! You’ve come. You have 47 Progressive ads, they I get it. So I feel tired.”

Panthers face New England Patriots in their second pre-season game on Friday, and Carolina coach Matt Rhule implies that he will make the decision as to who will start after that.
