Sidney Poitier’s family is sharing heartfelt memories of the star following his death on Thursday night at his home in Beverly Hills. He is 94 years old.
In a statement sent to The Hollywood Reporter, his relatives describe their grief after the Oscar winner passed away. “There are no words to convey the sense of loss and profound sadness we are feeling right now,” the statement read. “We are so grateful he was able to spend his final day surrounded by his family and friends.”
The message praises the actor, whose successful career includes memorable films like Lilies of the field, Guess who’s going to come and join me and In the heat of the night, as “a man who always puts his family first. He is our guiding light, who lights up our lives with love and infinite wonder. His smile was healed, his hugs were the warmest refuge, and his laughter was contagious.”
Many Hollywood celebrities have also sent their sincere condolences and tributes. Denzel Washington, Oprah Winfrey, Harry Belafonte, Ted Sarandos, Viola Davis and Tyler Perry were among those who paid tribute to Poitier.
In the heat of the night Directed by Norman Jefferson CHEAP that he was “heartbroken” after Poitier’s death. Jefferson, who has been friends with the star for more than 50 years, recalls, “He was probably one of the smartest actors I’ve ever worked with.”
