Simple ways to deal with mom burnout

Maternal burnout is generally a state of physical, emotional and mental exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress. If left untreated, burnout can become a part of your daily life, thereby leading to anxiety or depression. But, relax, mom burnout is preventable.

Breastfeed, burp, change diapers, cry for hours at night, spit, then clean, pump, wash bottles – the list of chores is endless for a baby, but the number of hours in the day and help is limited.

Every new mom goes through periods where she wakes up in the middle of the night, tired beyond her understanding with a baby that won’t fall asleep after 45 minutes or isn’t swaddled tightly to her chest. She silently cried alone with her aching body, restless mind and overwhelming feeling when her physical exhaustion refused to leave her while the suppressed emotions seemed to have no way out.

This, literally, is maternal burnout. Mother’s exhaustion doesn’t happen overnight. It happened slowly, over several days and nights. In the most invisible way, it takes over the new mother, causing her to pray to find a way out for herself.


Common Symptoms of Mother’s Exhaustion

While the symptoms of maternal burnout can be endless, some common symptoms are:

  • Feeling helpless and lonely
  • Excessive anger or temper
  • Constantly screaming or crying
  • Unexplained irritability or anxiety, difficulty controlling thoughts that seem to be racing
  • Exhausted, low in energy and unconcerned about surroundings
  • Sleepless
  • Feeling frustrated with life (including the baby)

Steps to handle Mommy Burnout:

Setting boundaries is key to reversing mom burnout. You also need to get help from those around you and understand that ‘doing it all’ doesn’t make you a better mother.

  • Help in feeding the baby. Use jars; Allow mothers to take a short break on days when cluster feeding is a pattern.
  • Leave housework for other family members. Hire help if it’s feasible.
  • Self-care is one way to boost your energy from depleted energy levels. Take that walk, get that manicure, meet that friend for coffee, and make that phone call.
  • Set parenting expectations that are realistic and personal. Do what works for you and your child. Not what your parents or sister or neighbor did to their baby.
  • Limit guests and visitors to the house. Have clear boundaries on the days people visit to see the baby, and keep cleaning the house to a minimum or organizing snacks for them.
  • Leave your house cluttered, older children clean up time, your meals simpler, your clothes simpler, and the expectations of those around you will be shattered if they have to because You don’t owe anyone an explanation in this. mixed with a baby.
