Singapore’s pavilion is an ‘oasis in the desert’ at Expo 2020 Dubai

(CNN) – There’s no shortage of eye-catching architecture at Dubai’s World Expo, but the lush greenery of the Singapore Pavilion makes it stand out. Built around three giant cones covered with vegetation, the pavilion is not a traditional self-contained building, the walls common to a green belt of trees and plants capable of creating their own microclimate.

Visitors enter the garden like an oasis in the desert, which connects with Singapore’s reputation of “City in Nature” and offers a peaceful corner in the midst of the bustling Expo. Phua Hong Wei, director of WOHA, the Singapore architecture firm that designed the pavilion, said: “But it’s not just a pavilion filled with trees. “It demonstrates the coexistence of architecture and nature. It demonstrates that buildings can be designed as a sustainable and responsible environment, achieving a source of energy and water that is not in the desert. It became a prototype with scalable and adaptive strategies, from buildings to cities.”

Inside, three nine-meter-high cones function as thematic areas, under the shade of a hanging garden. In the City Cone, a film that narrates the rise of urban areas and the challenges that threaten the natural world; in the Rainforest Cone, the high density of plants imported from Singapore recreates a dense forest; and in Flower Cone, darkness sets the mood for the visual feast created by a multitude of orchids.

Green technology

The structure is designed as a series of interconnected systems, inspired by nature. A canopy on top, with over 517 solar panels, generates the clean energy that powers everything. Water is drawn from the ground and desalinated to water plants and cool through misting fans; these nozzles use high pressure nozzles to create a fine mist that lowers the perceived temperature by 6 to 10 degrees Celsius, keeping the pavilion cool in the middle of the desert without the use of air conditioning.

Trees cover the ground, walls and ceilings act as a natural surface to help lower the temperature and filter the air. Small robots traverse the green walls, equipped with cameras and sensors that monitor the health of the plants and collect data such as humidity and oxygen levels. With that information, the amount of water is calibrated for irrigation and the grow lights are adjusted.

Singapore’s pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai is a vision of green innovation.

“The climate crisis reminds us that humans are part of a larger ecosystem and that we cannot ignore the impact of human actions on the planet,” said Phua. “The Covid pandemic is another wake-up call that has made us realize how valuable access to space and nature is. Both are important reminders that we must be active and urgent. The pavilion takes an approach that buildings should do more of, give back and make a positive impact on our environment.”

On the top floor, a “flea market” provides a space filled with vendors and workshops, and a circular gallery illustrates Singapore’s relationship with nature. The pavilion’s theme is “Nature, Nurture, Future,” which aims to show how nature, technology and architecture can be integrated, while highlighting the achievement of the small-city. state in this area. Despite being densely populated, nearly half of Singapore is covered by trees or vegetation, with this “greening” increasing from 36% in 1986 to almost 50% today.

According to Phua, many of the technologies deployed at the booth could be replicated in other buildings, or even on a city-wide scale. “Our solar canopy, desalination plant, automatic irrigation system and dry mist fan are integrated systems that improve and improve the environment,” he said.

“By incorporating nature into our buildings and cities, while preserving natural spaces, flora and fauna, we can take important steps in the fight against climate change.” .”
