Sleep tracking with a self-powered smart pillow


Those interested in better dealing with what’s happening to them at night have two main options. They can perform a sleep test in a medical facility or use an app on a smartphone or smartwatch – a more convenient but less accurate option. Realizing the need, many groups have begun to develop new sleep monitoring systems using tribonoid nanogenerators (TENGs).

These self-powered systems come in the form of eye masks, belts, patches, and sheets. Ding Li, Zhong Lin Wang and their colleagues wanted to modify this method to create a more comfortable version of head movement during sleep.

To create this new smart pillow, the researchers developed a three-layer electrically flexible, porous polymer. This movement between the tip and the layer converts the electric field around the neighboring electrodes and generates an electric current. Many of these self-propelled sensors have been combined to create a flexible and breathable TENG array (FB-TENG) that can be placed on a regular pillow.

The system can generate a voltage similar to that used, and it can track finger movements to detect letters. FB-TENG can capture the spreading pressure of a mannequin head. The researchers say that this smart pillow could be used in addition to sensor-based sleep monitoring.

For example, this sensor monitors patients with diseases that affect head movement, such as cervical spondylosis, a degenerative cervical spondylosis disorder. Furthermore, they say the smart pillow can be modified to provide an early warning system for people at risk of falling out of bed.
