CITY OF FLY, Mi. (WNEM) – The Bay City Department of Public Safety says a mother and daughter escaped a house fire early Wednesday morning thanks to their smoke alarms.
First responders were dispatched to 411 S. Sheridan Street at about 6:20 a.m. Bay City Sheriff Kurt Corradi found the 27-year-old mother and 5-year-old daughter outside the home as he arrive.
Corradi said: “She told me the smoke alarm woke her up and that she was able to grab her daughter and get her out of the residence. “This is proof that having a working smoke alarm in your home saves lives. We know what’s happened in the State of Michigan over the past few days with fire deaths. It is imperative for everyone to have a working smoke detector in their home.”
Michigan experienced 55 deadly home fires in 2022 that left 68 people dead, according to the Fire Services Department. That’s a 16% increase in the same time frame as the average from 2017 to 2021.
“68 deaths is 68 too many,” said Michigan State Fire Police Kevin Sehlmeyer. “These deadly fires are all too common and often preventable. The Michiganders must work together to prevent future fire deaths.”

Sehlmeyer said failing smoke alarms have been a common theme among the 55 deadly fires across Michigan in 2022 so far. He recommends putting smoke alarms in every bedroom and every floor of the house to alert families in the event of a life-saving fire.
While working with MI Prevention, the Bay City Department of Public Safety will install smoke alarms and CO2 detectors at no cost.

Meanwhile, in Bay City, Sheriff Corradi is grateful the family has a working smoke alarm.
“This fire could also be a tragedy,” Corradi said. “Thankfully, the smoke alarms did their job well. We had only been out of the house for about two minutes when we saw flames outside the building from several doors and windows. It didn’t take long for the fires to develop to the point where they didn’t have a working smoke alarm system – things took a turn for the worse.”
This fire is being investigated by the Bay City Fire Police.
The Hampton Township Department of Public Safety and the Portsmouth Town Fire Department supported Bay City’s teams battling Wednesday’s fire.
