Smoother styling, new platform for the brand’s future electric vehicle

Lincoln will celebrate its 100th anniversary this week — not the founding of the company in 1917 but its acquisition by Ford five years later. As part of those festivities, Lincoln will also announce a new electric vehicle prototype, the Star concept, although the company’s future electrification plans are still somewhat obscure.

Lincoln has yet to sell an EV. Their current plans for the future of electric vehicles include the introduction of three all-new electric vehicles by 2025, with a fourth model to follow in 2026. But there is no word on when the first one will follow. may come, and the Star concept provides only vague hints as to which platforms may be used. It’s safe to assume those vehicles will be SUVs, with Lincoln having abandoned its passenger car line entirely.

The Star concept rides on what Lincoln calls a “flexible battery architecture” it shares with Ford, either EV . platform which Ford announced it was developing last year. This mid-size platform offers both rear- and all-wheel drive setups, hence the versatility in the name, but Lincoln didn’t give out any details on the chemistry-related Star concept. battery or motor technology, leave those details to be filled in a little later.

Stylistically, the Star concept is a departure from the current Lincoln SUV line-up, featuring a more upright stance with a flat roof and more chrome folds/accents. There’s a bit of chrome to be found on the Star, which instead uses an innovative lighting system to brighten the exterior and features a heavily raked roofline with a high point at the top of the windshield. The grille (and the Lincoln designers adamantly called it the grille) is completely flat and spans almost the entire front of the car, with the logo actually sunk into a backlit cutout to surface. always smooth. Small geometrical cuts fan out of the logo so light textures can also be represented.

The most striking lighting signature is the wide strip of daytime running lights that sit atop the grille and extend up to the hood, which also hides the projector headlamps behind it that are visible when not in use. The hood itself is electronically tinted glass, which clears when driving allowing light to hit the interior’s front legroom. It darkens when parked to conceal goods that may be stored in the trash. Both the front and rear cargo areas have split openings, with a lower rear cargo extension that can seat both people to enjoy the outdoors.

Inside, the Star concept is spacious. The designers say it’s long enough to accommodate three rows of seats, but they chose to have the second row become the executive space instead. Lincoln hasn’t announced official dimensions for the Star, but its overall length is similar to that of the three-row Aviator. The centerpiece of the interior is a wide touchscreen that sits on top of the dashboard and looks similar to the one shown in the interior. Ford Evos debuted in Shanghai last year — although this appears to be a single display instead of the two side-by-side in the Evos.

The concept Lincoln showed off had no interior — perhaps the strongest signal yet as to how far away the concept might be from production. However, Lincoln also said that it expects more than half of its sales to be electric by mid-decade, and for that to happen, the company’s deadlines will need to be sped up. If those three promised EVs don’t arrive until 2025, they’ll have a hard time calculating that share of those sales. Maybe the company revived the idea of a Mach-E-based SUV to get out the door faster, but given the current state of affairs, it’s hard to pin down an EV based on the Star concept, on a platform new, appearing any time before 2024.
