snapdragon: Announced Snapdragon 7 Gen 1; to power upcoming mid-range Android smartphones
Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 series finally adopted new naming convention and first chip – Snapdragon 7 Generation 1 – is now out, succeeding Snapdragon 778G from last year (2021). The new Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 is built on Samsung’s 4nm process.
Like its predecessor, Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 will be seen in the upcoming mid-range segment Android smartphone. And this is the first Snapdragon 7 series chipset to come with Qualcomm’s 7th generation AI Engine and support for a 200MP sensor.
The Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 octa-core Kryo CPU comes with one Cortex-A710 Prime core clocked at 2.4GHz, three Cortex-A710 cores clocked at 2.36GHz, and four Cortex-A510 cores clocked at 1.8GHz. The CPU inside the hood is paired with the Adreno GPU which has 20% better performance than its predecessor inside the Snapdragon 778G. In addition, the new GPU can double the frame rate while maintaining the same power consumption as the 778G. The chipset comes with support for up to 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM.
The Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 features a Snapdragon X62 5G modem, with download speeds of up to 4.4 Gbps over 5G connections in standalone (SA) and non-standalone (NSA) modes. And WiFi 6E is there along with Bluetooth 5.3, bringing support for Snapdragon Sound and aptX support.
7 Gen 1 comes with a trio of Qualcomm Spectra ISPs that support up to 200MP photo capture and 4K HDR video recording. Phones running on the 1st generation Snapdragon 7 chip will be able to capture 10-bit HEIC images and record HEVC videos.
The phone running on the 1st generation Snapdragon 7 chip is expected to launch in the next few weeks.
Oppo will likely be the first company to launch a smartphone powered by a processor. The company’s Oppo Reno 8 Pro+ is said to be powered by the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1. The phone will launch on May 23.
