SNL Cold Open in search of classified documents, death of Tire Nichols – The Hollywood Reporter

Saturday Night Live‘s cold open introduced Mikey Day’s Attorney General Merrick Garland in comic style.

“He means business. First, he hunts down the January 6 rebels and makes them pay,” the trailer begins. “Now, he’s looking for classified documents, and he’s going to everyone: Democrats, Republicans or whoever Trump is right now. You don’t want to be in his sights: Attorney General Merrick Garland.”

The five-minute segment in the January 28 episode featured seemingly fictitious FBI agents played by Kenan Thompson, Ego Nwodim, and Bowen Yang, who are leading the search for classified documents at his home. Mike Pence, Kamala Harris and Barack Obama.

Thompson’s agent, Conrad Nance, began the findings by saying he had visited Pence’s home in Indiana and that the former vice president “needs a friend.”

“When he opened the door, he said, ‘You’ve come’ with a big smile, and he offered to make pancakes for us,” he said. “Our search did not reveal any further classified documents. However, in an envelope marked ‘second tax’, we discovered photographs of country/pop singer Shania Twain, clipped from some magazine.

Thompson went on to say that when he tried to leave, Pence asked him how he could have left when he was “it” and put his arm around him before running away. SNL the actor insists he doesn’t play with him. “However, I would say that if you know Mr. Pence, if you are his friend, check your people,” he concluded. “That is all.”

Day’s Garland then entrusted the work to Nwodim’s special agent Casey Combs, who searched Vice President Harris’ home for documents and found nothing. “Joe Biden wouldn’t even give this woman a pen,” Nwodim said. “Do you think she has classified documents? Please.”

Yang’s agent, Derek K, coldly ended, sharing his excitement about being in Obama’s home.

“Mr. Obama opened the door and said, ‘Are you selling girl scout cookies?’ that left us all completely blown away and almost completely dead,” Yang began. “We then entered the house and were shown a number of things, including 175 letters from Lin- Manuel Miranda, begs the president to attend a performance of Hamilton.”

When the former president was asked about the classified documents, he said he was “not in the government game and doing Hollywood business,” before continuing to ignore the call from Beyoncé.

Before the chilling opening ended, Thompson returned to the stage with Day’s Garland to ask about their next mission.

“Hey boss, when we’re done playing with these pamphlets, we’re going to go down to Memphis and make sure justice is done there too, won’t we?” That day said, “I really hope so.” Thompson replied, “Yeah, you damn it. Just make sure.”

Michael B. Jordan hosts the show with Lil Baby as musical guests.
