‘SNL’ Cold Open on Novak Djokovic, ‘How I Met Your Father’ and more – The Hollywood Reporter

Saturday Night Live’the latest cold opening is filled with political and pop-culture references from previous weeks – including Novak Djokovic, Wordle, How I met your father, Jason Momoa and Lisa Bonet, the director of green M&M and of course, Donald Trump.

Kate McKinnon’s Laura Ingraham appeared on her version The Ingraham corner. Before welcoming some guests, McKinnon’s Ingraham rammed his head into Joe Biden’s presidency, saying everyone could agree that “it was a disaster.” She went on to list inflation, gas as $19 and the green M&M who was “cancelled for being a whore.”

Aidy Bryant’s Ted Cruz, Pete Davidson’s Djokovic, Ego Nwodim’s Candace Owens and James Austin Johnson’s Donald Trump were guests on the interim news program.

“The beard is still strong, huh,” McKinnon’s Ingraham said while introducing Bryant’s Cruz. “Oh, yes, my beard is like the 6th: It was shocking at first, but sadly, it has normalized.”

Bryant’s Cruz emotionally apologized for calling the Capitol Rioters “terrorists,” saying he should never have called them that. “The truth is they’re big, muscular men with big D-energy,” he said, adding that people should book trips to Cancun early because it’s going to get cold.

McKinnon’s Ingraham then welcomed Davidson’s Djokovic, who dealt with being deported from Australia for refusing to get vaccinated. “I never thought I would use the word deportation so badly,” McKinnon told Davidson. “My visa was denied, but then I appealed,” he told her, adding that the judge’s decision was “invalid”.

Next up was Nwodim’s Owens, who began appearing on the show by saying, “Martin Luther King is going to vote for Trump.”

“Libertarians have tried to do everything about race,” continues Owens of Nwodim. “To quote the only words Martin Luther King ever said: ‘I have a dream.’ That’s it. End of citation. Nothing about money, jobs or schools, unless you count his gravestone, which says, ‘Well done, the racist gang is over.’

During the chilling opening, Ingraham thanks the donors she still has: COVID Negs, giving you a negative outcome, even if you are positive; White pizza “for when Italians are too nationalistic”; Bible Belt; and Paula Deen’s Chickpea Mash, “not radical Muslim hummus.”

The final guest on her show was Johnson’s Donald Trump, who played a game of Wordle, which included words like Boost, Mayer, HIMYF, Momoa, and Prada, leading up to the final word, “Trump.”

“I would rather be mayor of anything,” said Trump’s Johnson, discussing the word Mayer, “than Governor Ron DeSantis. I will beat him badly if he goes against me, like I beat Hillary because the only Hilary we like is Duff from How I met your father. ”

MacGruber Will Forte hosts the show, with rock band Måneskin as musical guests.

In Forte’s opening monologue, he considers how he was the last of his ex SNL Colleagues were asked to organize a series of sketches. As he was trying to enjoy the moment, Kristen Wiig broke the monologue with a round of applause louder than Forte received. Wiig continued to appear in sketches with Forte throughout the night.

Lorne Michaels showed up, saying that it was wrong to ask Forte to host, and that it was actually Willem Dafoe, who also dropped by Studio 8H on Saturday night.

“I texted Willem and you know the autocorrect feature,” Michaels told Forte. (Dafoe will be hosting on January 29).

Transparent Weekend update, Davidson and Jost mention their purchase of the Staten Island Ferry: “We’re boat people, Colin.”
